I was watching the last seconds bleed out, and heard Chris Collingsworth tell that story about how Clinton Portis still talks to Sean Taylor like #21 was still there with him.

I got a good throat-lump hearing that.

...but still trying to get the bad taste of that "cannot advance a kickoff unless the receiving team touches it" rule out of my mouth.

OK, the Tuck Rule made sense. In a pre-instant reply era, you don't want your refs to have to make that kind of a judgment call. But in what alternate universe does a rule explicitly reward a team (at least reduce the impact) of that kind of @#$%-up? Since I've been a football fan (late 70s), they've enacted so many rules to avoid rewarding a "mistake" (fumbling team cannot advance due to the Holy Roller, "injuries" under 2 minutes cost a timeout, offensive false start under two minutes cause a 10-second runoff, etc.), and NOBODY thought to rethink this one???!!!

are not to avoid awarding a mistake, rather, they are to reduce players gaming the system for an advantage. Since the clock stops for injury (most of which involve the player coming back after a play, if you were on a two minute drill, wouldn't you go down to stop the clock? Of course you would. And the holy roller is to avoid having to decide what is a fumble and what is a forward lateral. Offensive penalties also stop the clock, if only momentarily, so there is a runoff to stop you giving five yards to gain time. Advancing the kick recovery is, however, a silly rule that punishes a team for making a good football play.

That was a huge momentum swing. The Hawks had locked up their playoff spot weeks ago, while the Skins had 4 emotional wins after ST's death just to make it. There were also the problems with 3 starting offensive linemen out with injuries. They struggled all night running the ball and protecting Collins.
