The problem I have with the college football bowls
Aside from the fact that we will never have a true national champion the way that it is set up now.

What rarely gets mentioned is the time lag between the last regular season game and the bowls. Did I hear that it will be seven weeks between Ohio States last game and the Championship Bowl? The dynamics can change dramatically in the amount of time off. All momentum is lost. The teams that are playing the best at the end of the season could be quite different from the teams that play well in the bowls. I don't have any proof here, but I suspect that the southern teams would have the advantage because they are able to train in nicer weather. Which brings me to another point.

All the bowls are in the southern part of the US. This means that all the northern schools would have to be considered the visiting team. It's about as fair as always having the Super Bowl at Lambeau Field.

OK, that's all. Thanks for listening. :)

1. I can't argue with you.
(Never could! ;))

It also bothers me that the match-ups are based more on what will sell than what might make a good game. For example, Texas was being considered for, I think, the Gator Bowl against a higher-ranked team, but the deliberations apparently had to do with whether Texas fans would travel after the letdown of not making a BCS Bowl. So we get the Alamo Bowl against 6-6 Iowa (and we were lucky to come out of it with a win!) but how fair was it to Iowa that San Antonio is 90 miles down the interstate from Austin? How fair was it to Michigan (or Texas) to play USC in the Rose Bowl? The schedule and location won't ever please everyone but some schools end up playing in these same venues year after year.

I'm all for trying to maintain some of the traditions of these bowls but since all of the games got bought out by corporations, just how traditional are they any more? There have been some good suggestions here on DU that would incorporate at least a semblance of a playoff schedule while maintaining the bowl traditions. The current system sure ain't it!

3. But if the lag hurt Ohio State, shouldn't it have hurt Florida?
I believe that would work for both teams. If a team is hungry for a championship, they should still be hungry after 51 days. So, either Ohio State didn't use their 51 days to train and study tape of Florida or they totally underesitmated Florida or they weren't as good as everyone said they were in the first place.

A 51 day period to train, study your opponent, and come up with some great game plans? Seems to me like that would be a plus.

And I think that many bowls are played in the South because of the nice weather. It insures that fans will come to the stadiums and stay for the whole game and buy lots of concessions.

Seems to me that Ohio State just got an ass whoopin' and all of the excuses in the world ain't gonna change that. :D
