ESPN orgasms over Bobby Abreu
Am I the only one who's getting a little pukey over ESPN having a freaking orgasm about Bobby Abreu scoring one run after a walk and batting 0-3?

Then the SS for the best team in baseball hits for the cycle and in that same game, the winning pitcher who is a rookie wins his league leading 14th game.

When did YES Network buy ESPN?

1. I've been a Philly fan for 45 years
and I liked the work Abreu did for the Phillies but his best work is way behind him. The Yanks have so much money just to toss around plug in players here and there for the short run. Hopefully in four or five years we'll be reading about one of the kids the Phils got in this trade doing an outstanding job while Abreu most likely will be retired by then. I wish him well, but I think the Phils got the best deal.

2. Bobby wasn't a terrible pickup by any means
But I agree, I think his best years are behind him, and I don't think all this hype is worth it--if this was Abreu in 2005 pre All-star break form then I could see alot of excitement, but he's not at that level anymore.

I think the Yankees sent alot over there for him too--a team like the Tigers got a better deal for a guy like Sean Casey, IMO. We'll see how it turns out, but I think you're spot on about the Phils being better off in a few years for this trade.

6. No, Carlos Guillen. you must have missed the part about the
BEST team in baseball, not the one mired 7.5 games behind!
:-)

5. ESPN loves the Yankees.
The Sportscenter anchors just cum at the site of Derek Jeter.

14. Faux Sports also loves the Yankees.
Joe Torre can do no wrong. It's pitiful to hear Joe Buck announce the games. It's painful to hear him genuflect at the altar of the Yankees. His late father was such a fine announcer. Tim McCarver does no favors either. He also genuflects at the altar of the Yankees.

7. Yeah, the Tigers are always the 3rd or 4th story
ESPN did cover yesterday's game, but it sure was second news to what was going on with the Yankees, the Red Sox, and the A's.

As a Tigers' fan, I say, GRRRRRRR!

8. Glad to see I'm not the only one who notices
ESPN worships at the altar of Yankees and Red Sox. If a guy like Albert Pujols hits 100 homers, he will be lucky or juiced since he isn't a Yankee or Red Sox player. If the Tigers go 59-1 the rest of the way, it won't be legitimate because they aren't the Yankees or Red Sox. If the White Sox win the World Series...wait, that happened. And ESPN hated it because it wasn't the Yankees or Red Sox.

10. of course they do
a: ESPN is in Connecticut. b: the Yankees and Red Sox represent a geographic area with, oh, 40 million people or so, consisting of the traditional home of the US (New England) and some of the wealthiest, most advertiser friendly areas of the country (not to mention the advertisers themselves) and c: there is a long term rivalry going on between them. Their ratings increase when they talk about the Sox and Yanks, can you blame them for covering them more?

If the Tigers go 59-1, does anyone outside of Michigan care? if Pujols hits a homer, does anyone outside St. Louis care? the Red Sox and Yankees have not just a local or regional fanbase, but a national and international one as well.

12. Yeah, I used to listen to ESPN radio/Colin Cowhred
before I discovered Stephanie Miller on at the same time. He has this "West Coast Hour" before his regular show.

So one week, the Dodgers are playing the Giants and the Angels are playing the As. So what does he lead off with for his "West Coast Hour"? Why, Yankees-Red Sox, of course. I gather that when ESPN says West Coast, they mean of the Hudson River...

16. That's somewhat true, but TRUE fans love a good story
no matter who's playing. Everyone loves a comeback story. ESPN is not a particular champion of the underdog; they could change that if they wanted to and switch the dynamics, but they choose not to.

Case in point? Michigan State basketball. Obnoxious program, underachievers, laden with thugs and lawbreakers and early leavers, yet ESPN treats them like gods and the networks broadcast them whenever possible. They could do this with the Tigers - IF they felt like it.

15. Excellent post!
My mom and sis were in Vegas a few weeks ago and almost everyone they met--tourists, locals, workers- were either Yankees or Red Sox fans.

13. You're not Skip Bayless, are you?
On espn 2's 'Cold Pizza' Skip had the temerity to say, sarcastically, that (OMG!) Abreu had the greatest at bat for a walk ever. :sarcasm:

And was 0 for 3, otherwise.

Thank You Skip Bayless.

Torre should have fielded the stupid questions by saying, "A-Rod had a better game, wanna talk about that?'

I'm surprised Abreu didn't have "sunny nobility."

ESPN is the ass-kisser of the professional athelete.
