Governor Granholm issues proclamation that Galarraga pitched perfect game

LANSING, Mich. (WXYZ) - In response to last night's blown call, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm has issued a proclamation declaring that Armando Galarraga did pitch a perfect game.

The official proclamation reads as follows:

Whereas, pitching a perfect game is considered one of the crowning achievements of sport, attained only 20 times in the history of Major League Baseball; and,

Whereas, a perfect game is defined as when a pitcher or pitchers retire each batter during the course of a game lasting at least nine innings; and,

Whereas, Armando Galarraga retired all 27 players in order, a feat no Tigers pitcher has ever accomplished; and,

Whereas, an umpire’s missed call resulted in Armando Galarraga being charged a hit that clearly should have been an out; and,

Whereas, the umpire graciously admitted his mistake after the game ended; and,

Whereas, video replays unmistakably show Galarraga to have retired all batters;

Now, Therefore, be it Resolved that I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby declare Armando Galarraga to have pitched a perfect game, and I join Tigers fans all across the globe in saluting his unassailable accomplishment — the first perfect game in Tigers history.

4. So now politicians can decree sports results?
This is bullshit. Wait till some politician decrees that Team X really won the superbowl because of a blown call. Waaaay tooo King of England kind of dictatorial for my tastes. :banghead:

I'm sorry politicians interfere enough with stuff as it is (science, education etc). I have a real problem with this. Its a form of power grab.
Politicians make laws not declare who pitched a perfect game or not.
On edit: I have unfortunate experience in political figures interfering where they don't belong. Trust me, this is a slippery slope that sports should NOT travel.

10. It doesn't over-rule the call or get him in the record books...
...it's partly a political stunt and she'd be foolish not to recognize public sentiment.

7. This sounds like government overreach
Does the governor have any right to overrule a legal call, even one that is clearly fucked up, by an umpire, who is, after all, an employee of a private entity?

Where are the teabaggers on this one? What does Rand Paul have to say?

(Apologies if you were being 100% tongue-in-cheek here...)

There's no "overreach" because there's no overthrow of anything MLB ruled. Read the operative part of the proclamation:

"I, Jennifer M. Granholm... declare Armando Galarraga to have pitched a perfect game..."

She's just stating her opinion, as sports fans everywhere do, and is not using any coercive power of the government to rewrite the record books. The only difference between my issuing such a proclamation and her doing it is her use of the appositive phrase "governor of the state of Michigan." She's not even claiming that she has any authority in that capacity to officially reverse the call; she's just playing on whatever notoriety he office gives her to publicize the statement.

All I hope is that she didn't spend much time on this, since the governor of the state of Michigan has much bigger fish to fry!!!
