1. Checking in....
a little disappointed in the way the season is turning out right now, but I still think Jack Z is one hell of a GM..

2. One hell of a GM?
Edited on Sun May-23-10 10:46 AM by Upton
It's a little early to make that judgment. Lets see, he brought in the mentally ill Milton Bradley, traded young players, one of whom (Aumont) throws in the upper nineties and is considered a top prospect, for a rent a pitcher who obviously doesn't want to be here, traded Brandon Morrow, who was selected over Lincecum, for virtually nothing, and brought back an old man who sleeps during games as the primary DH..I mean, come on.

The Mariners are 28th in MLB in runs scored. Coming off a year in which they finished, you guessed it, 28th in runs scored. If Jack Z is "one hell of a GM" why wasn't this lack of run production problem addressed during the off season?

Sometimes you have to take a chance... the guy is a capable hitter...
traded young players for a rent a pitcher who obviously doesn't want to be here,

What makes you think Lee doesn't want to be here? And regardless of whether he does or not, bringing him into the rotation gave the M's the best 1-2 in baseball. And all those young players he traded away?? Bavasi's trash...
traded Brandon Morrow, who was selected over Lincecum, for virtually nothing,

Let me know when Morrow achieves anything remotely as impressive as Lincecum then.. until that happens, he was just more of Bavasi's trash to clean out.
and brought back an old man who sleeps during games as the primary DH..I mean, come on.

1. Griffey is not the primary DH..he's platooning with Sweeney. 2. According to insiders, Griffey is pretty much the only reason Ichiro is still in Seattle.

And as for run production, name a free agent who was available they could have realistically gotten? Who'd have thought Figgins and Kotchman would have forgotten how to hit a damned ball once they got to Seattle?

5. Griffey is or was the DH against RH pitching..
considering RHs are what the Mariners see the majority of the time, that makes him the primary DH. Of course, now that he's batting .191 he's been relegated temporarily to the clubhouse where he can finish napping.

Also, Ichiro is signed through I believe 2012. A contract he signed before Griffey came back....I don't see what Griffey has to do with keeping him in Seattle. Unless, you're continuing with the theme put out by the Griffey apologists in the Puget Sound media, that his jokes made Ichiro happy and the clubhouse a better place to be..

Of course, if the old man had been producing at the plate, you wouldn't hear this attempted justification for his continued presence on the Mariner roster, despite the fact that he literally hasn't hit his weight since returning..

As for Morrow, you just don't give up on a guy drafted that high that quickly. Particularly when you basically give him away. Notice how the Mariners have been having trouble in the bullpen, notably in the set up role?

Oh, and if you honestly think Lee is going to resign with the Mariners, I've got some ocean front property in Kansas you might be interested in..

All I'm saying is, the jury's still out on Jack Z. And all these moves he was praised for in the off season have so far pretty much blown up in his face..

6. Being signed means exactly dick..
Johjima was signed too.. as was Kaz Sasaki.. they both opted out of their contracts and went home to Japan.. but as for Griffey, I'm certainly not about to suggest he should still be playing.. I completely agree that his time has passed, and he should be given the chance to retire in a fashion that befits a Seattle sports icon.
