Pedro signs with NY...
the NY Mets that is.

"ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Pedro Martinez closed in on a four-year deal with the New York Mets, and the Boston Red Sox resigned themselves Monday to losing the three-time Cy Young Award winner."

SNIP

"Martinez's agent, Fernando Cuza, told the Mets he will attempt to work out a deal with them after New York guaranteed a fourth year, a person involved in the talks said on condition of anonymity."

SNIP

"Boston's final proposal was a $40.5 million, three-year deal that contained a club option for 2008, a baseball official said, also on condition of anonymity. The Red Sox thought the Mets' offer was for $56 million over four years, the official said, but a Mets official said that figure was not correct.

An agent who spoke with the Mets said New York's proposal was worth about $52 million."

I have mixed emotions about this. I hate to see Petey go, but his arm might fall off the next time he pitches too. I guess we'll see.

2. The Mets are overpaying for Pedro
He's still a good pitcher, but his skills are in obvious decline, having already lost about 5 MPH off his fastball.

The fact that the Mets want to give him four guaranteed years at $13 million per shows why the Mets are the Mets.

3. I guess they are happier with Martinez than a good ole boy like Schilling.
all I can say is thank God the Yankees didn't sign him, altho all evidence indicates that there was no serious interest in him. I wish our cross-borough rivals well as long as they are not playing against us.

4. they're taking lessons from the Yankees . . .
who are currently stuck with one Kevin Brown to the tune of $15 mil (or something like that) for the coming year . . . he also has a no trade clause . . . not that anyone would want him, mind you . . .
