Phillies Fan Tased While Running on Field
VIDEO HERE: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5161474

<SNIP>

Lt. Frank Vanore, a police spokesman, says Commissioner Charles Ramsey reviewed the tape and felt the officer had acted within the department's guidelines, which allow officers to use Tasers to arrest fleeing suspects. Vanore says internal affairs is still investigating.

Ramsey told KYW Radio in Philadelphia that he supported the officer's decision to use a Taser. "It was inappropriate for him to be out there on the field," Ramsey said. "Unless I read something to the contrary, that officer acted appropriately. I support him 100 percent."

Consalvi, wearing a baseball cap, red T-shirt and khaki shorts, hopped a fence and scurried around the outfield, eluding two security officers in the bottom of the eighth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals. One officer used a Taser and the fan went down in a heap. Several Phillies placed gloves over their faces and appeared to be stifling laughter at the wild scene.

Phillies spokeswomen Bonnie Clark said the police department is investigating the matter and discussing with the team whether using the stun gun was appropriate.

Police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore told The Philadelphia Inquirer police internal affairs will open an investigation to determine if the firing "was proper use of the equipment."

-----------------

Steve Consalvi, 17, reportedly called his father for permission to do so. "He said, 'Dad, can I run on the field? I said, 'I don't think you should, son,'" Wayne Consalvi told the Philadelphia Daily News of the conversation he had with his son.

5. IMO, the act did not warranted being tased. No one was in danger.

7. Maybe this guy wasn't a danger..
but who is to say the next one won't be? I think tasing is an appropriate option that should be freely used on anyone who comes running on the field during a sporting event..

21. I watched the video..
they couldn't catch the guy. Anyway, you act like the cops shot him or something.

He might have been 17...but there was no one there to check ID when he jumped onto the field.

Anyway, he was old enough to know exactly what he was doing, meaning he's old enough to accept the consequences..

23. Not Quite...
He looked like and was a chicken "scampering" around the field. Yes, he could have been tackled and would have bee, but a cop who was compensating for his lack of genital size...

9. They couldn't catch him.
The kid was quite fast by all accounts and was starting to make the cops look foolish. Tasing the bastard was a bit of an overreaction to this in my opinion, though one might say he got off easy compared to The Vet days. Security would have taken him under the stands and beaten the balls off of him in the 80's.

15. Yeah, the cop had had too many donuts. But there were about 20 grounds
crew milling around watching the guy run around. A quick takedown by one or some of them would have had them on the news that night. Watching the video, the kid did not look threatening.

27. Hey I agree.
I don't think he should have been tased. I'm just saying they couldn't catch the guy in a timely fashion, he was dekeing and ducking all over the place. There wasn't going to be a quick take down. My point is that he got off comparatively easy compared to what he would have gotten years ago.

24. A guy running fast on a baseball field?
Don't tase him. Sign him with the Royals -- we could use him.

16. Philadelphia has seen a good amount of sports violence. There was a huge row
in the stands at the last game I attended in Philly.

The Iggles had a judge and jail in the Vet.
