Thinking about roberto clemente today
Edited on Sun Jan-17-10 09:14 PM by fishnfla
He died trying to help the victims of the earthquake in Nicaragua 1972. He had sent 3 planeloads of relief goods, but they were stolen by the corrupt government. He went on the 4th plane that crashed to make sure the victims got the aid. He wasn't even from Nicaragua.

I work in health care, I am putting out some feelers to get on a medical mission as soon as possible.

1. And he was a great ballplayer as well
Humanitarian and ballplayer. I had the great fortune of seeing Roberto Clemente face Bob Gibson in the very first MLB game I ever saw in person. Gibson won, Clemente went 0-3. MLB has rightfully named a humanitarian award after Clemente. Great man. And a good time to honor his memory; MLK B'day.

3. .....
:wow:

Anyone know what happened? He didn't seem like the type that would get TS'd. This is surprising to me.

4. I know he made a pretty horrible homophobic post in GD a few hours before he was TS'd
There may be more to the story than that, I don't know, but that's all I saw. It looked like it was spurred by a long-time conflict with a particular poster. I was pretty surprised to see the post, because, while I didn't have a ton of experiencing interacting with him, it did seem out of character based on what I'd seen of his posts.

6. I was reminded of him today by Galarraga and his sportsmanlike
response to what happened.
