Singletary: Alex Smith new starting QB
Alex Smith is the 49ers starting quarterback, apparently for good.

"We're not going to be a flavor-of-the-month kind of team,'' Coach Mike Singletary said.

Singletary announced Smith's promotion over incumbent Shaun Hill on Monday, a day after the former No. 1 pick nearly rallied the 49ers back from a three-touchdown deficit in a 24-21 loss to the Houston Texans.

Smith's first start since Nov. 12, 2007 will come Sunday against Peyton Manning and the Colts.

Against Houston, Smith completed 15 of 22 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns, igniting an offense that had sputtered all season.

Singletary said Hill was the best choice to start the season, because of his heady play, but said Smith

was rapidly developing behind the scenes.

I think most 49er fans believe this is a good idea, but Smith sure has got a tough one next week in Indianapolis.

1. I wish I could root for the 49ers because I love Mike Singletary
"We're not going to be a flavor-of-the-month kind of team,''

Reminds me of...

Seems like a good move. It's not the defense Alex Smith has to worry about -- except O-line has to figure out a way to contain Freeney. It's the Colt's offense the 49er's have to worry about.

I reluctantly agree (on edit, that it will be three in-a-row). Smith stinks.

16. In defense of Smith
Edited on Mon Oct-26-09 08:10 PM by JonLP24
He had three different offensive coordinators in as many years and those that think that doesn't impact a quarterback's development doesn't understand the position. He was average in his first full season as a starter which isn't bad. Terry Bradshaw had an awful rookie season and Peyton Manning had an average year in his first full year as a starter. It took Elway several years to develop into a quarterback that puts up great numbers--he wouldn't of made it in today's NFL that demands instant success.

I will point you to this -- 'said Smith was rapidly developing behind the scenes.' Singletary who conducts the training camp and all the practices I'm sure he sees something that we don't see a sports fan as evidenced by the GREAT numbers he put up in 1 half against the Texans. 68% of the passes, 206 yards, 3-1 TD-INT ratio. You don't 'stink' and put up those numbers.

If the 49ers lose to the Colts it will be because of two major reasons. They can't stop Peyton Manning and they can't block Dwight Freeney. Smith could have an awful game but the Colts really don't have the defense for it unless the D-line harasses the QB all day.

20. Complete agreement with paragraph one
But Hill won the job coming out of training camp.

I expect the Colts offense will beat the 49ers offense in time of possession which in turn will give Manning time to beat down the defense -- essentially what you suggest.

As for Smith's numbers, I think the 49ers caught the Texans by surprise in the second half by switching game plans. The Colts should be ready for it.

Okay, stinks is too harsh. Smith has an accurate, strong arm and is supposedly smart as a whip. But he makes really dubious decisions in critical moments.

22. Remember
Smith had a decent year when Norv Turner was the OC....he's got potential. Of course, whether it will be fulfilled under Raye or not is a whole different story.

8. Says the fan
of the pathetic team that blew a 21 point lead, giving up 36 in the second half alone yesterday.

Yep, this year the "Phins" are playing a REAL schedule...that means they've got to play all 4 quarters.

13. dude you lost to the fucking Texans...
After Sunday you'll be 3-4 with the 28th easiest schedule.

You and douche one's whole fucking meme was how the Phins would be lucky to win one game with the hardest schedule in the league.

It's going to be sweet when my team ends up with a better record than yours.

15. No, I believe that
cboy and myself suggested that because the Dolphins have a tougher schedule this year, that there would be no playoffs. While you countered that their improvement record wise would continue. So far, though Miami is better off without noodle armed Chad, we look to be correct. I find it interesting, that at 2-4, you've already lowered the bar for what you would consider a successful season. Little early to be giving up, isn't it?

You know, the Saints scored a TD with only 2 seconds to go in the first half ..meaning that your "Phins" gave up a total of 43 points over the last 30:02 yesterday....what an embarrassment, how humiliating..yeah, it's the ref's fault.

You and Douche one were so concerned about Miami's tough schedule---I mean that's all you two douchebags could talk about.

Oh yeah---it's a tough schedule---the toughest in the NFL--- and they may miss the playoffs... for sure.

But a losing season like you suggest in this post?

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=215&topic_id=94428&mesg_id=94455

I don't think so.

So let's talk about your loser team. There are only two teams with an easier schedule than the Niners....two... and here you sit at 3-3 and you'll most likely be 3-4 next Sunday. 3-4 with one of the easiest schedules in the NFL---fucking pathetic.

Oh and BTW: The Phins were rated 22 last season with the easiest schedule-- The Niners are 28th this season.

douche---we lost to the best team in the NFL on Sunday---The Niners lost to Houston. I came in after the game and posted my thoughts---dissing my team for it's poor secondary play and yep---the refs for fucking it up for both teams...

You --- you hide--- no posts...no mention of your pathetic team... because you're a candy ass.

BUT this is typical from you--- dissing other teams while your teams continue to suck the big ones.

Douche

23. Yeah, 3 losses one of which was a last second loss to the 6-1 Vikings
nearly another comeback on the road from a 21 point deficit, and all of which Gore was injured. Plus, the Dolphins are 2-4 you've got to be fucking kidding me.

25. Well...you were blaming the refs
giving up 43 points in 30:02, I wonder if that's some sort of record? Probably not. I do know that the Saints 21 point comeback tied a franchise record. So your "stingy" Dolphin defense is on the books. Congrats.

Say it with me--- you will be 3-4 on Sunday and you play one of the easiest schedules in the league.

All off season you and douche one were yapping about the Phins easy schedule last season--- 22 in the league in 2008.

This season the Niners our 28th in the league but they're still fucking losers.

I am relishing the fact that your team is digressing rather than progressing.

17. Upton...
The offensive line is too small to mount any kind of power running game or consistent pass protection. And I think it's a little late at this juncture to adjust to the type of athletic attack coached so well by Bob McKittrick -- heck, I don't even know if this group is capable of that. It's a unit that's been neglected by the front office for years. And it really shows.

There was a piece in the Chronicle today how the Raiders actually screwed-up the 49ers in the draft by taking Heyward-Bey over Crabtree in the draft. Did you see it? Had the Raiders taken Crabtree the 49ers probably would have picked OT Michael Oher of Mississippi -- who is currently starting for the Ravens. I don't have any issue with Crabtree (besides the holdout) but it's kind of a moot point having him when you don't have time to throw a pass.

19. Strange the way things work out that way
I remember the draft was rich in offensive tackles. There was even talk, that after a poor showing at the NFL Combine, that Andre Smith might drop to 10th.

No doubt the plan all along was to take an OT, but after Crabtree dropped in their lap, the Niners were put in a tough position. I mean, what else could they do? Crabtree is potentially just the kind of game breaking WR the 49ers need, and you have to admit, that under the circumstances, he acquitted himself rather well on Sunday.

You're right though, the OL is a mess. It's just going to take some time to rebuild it, go with another scheme or whatever. Smith is a little more nimble, and I'm sure that's part of the thinking in going with him as the starter. I tell you, nothing is more frustrating than seeing Hill or Smith not having the time to make a play.

9. He's got to get his feet wet sooner or later.
Might as well make it sooner. I think it's a good move, and the team really has little to lose by doing this. There's enough structure there that this isn't just throwing someone to the wolves. He'll have his struggles, but if he's going to be their #1 guy down the line then get him started.
