Schilling Won't Run for Kennedy's Seat in Senate
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/09/22/AR2009092204596.html

NEW YORK -- Curt Schilling won't test out just how popular he is in Massachusetts.

The former Boston Red Sox pitcher, beloved in the state for his starring role in ending an 86-year championship drought, announced Tuesday he isn't running for Edward M. Kennedy's seat in the U.S. Senate.

Earlier this month, Schilling expressed interest in pursuing the post held by the Massachusetts Democrat for almost 50 years before he died in August. But appearing on "Joe Buck Live" on HBO on Tuesday night, Schilling quashed the notion.

"Regardless of the amount of support and outreach that's been given to me, it just did not make sense," he said.

Kennedy, who was first elected to the Senate in 1962, died Aug. 25 of brain cancer at age 77. Primaries are scheduled for Dec. 8, and the general election will be Jan. 19.

..snip

Well, that's one good move you made, Curt.

1. Maybe he looked at the polls and saw that he's viewed
as a douchebag by majority of voters...

5. Easy there Boss! He may move to Louisiana or Mississippi where he
would have a real good chance of getting elected!

7. No doubt
All ya gotta do is say ya go to church, that you have family values and that only once in a while you fuck around on your wife and you are a shoo in way down here in Dixie.

Bunning and Schilling, ugly stains on my Avatar.

9. Sorry to pile on, but throw Steve Carlton up there as well
never ran for office -- thankfully -- but:

http://www.nytimes.com/1994/04/14/sports/on-baseball-was-silence-better-for-steve-carlton.html

According to Pat Jordan, the writer of the article, Carlton alternately said that the world is ruled or controlled by the Russian and United States Governments, which "fill the air with low-frequency sound waves," the Elders of Zion, British intelligence agencies, "12 Jewish bankers meeting in Switzerland" and "a committee of 300 which meets at a roundtable in Rome."

Not only that, but Carlton also charges, according to Jordan, that President Clinton has "a black son" he won't acknowledge and that the AIDS virus was created at a secret Maryland biological warfare laboratory "to get rid of gays and blacks."

All of this and more from the fertile mind of a man who lives reclusively in what Jordan describes as a bunker in Durango, Colo.

:scared:

There does seem to be something about the pitcher's mindset that gives rise to right-wing freakiness. :eyes:

11. Hmmm. I'm not sure if that is the typical Schilling and Republican whack-nuttery!
That's just plain off the wall, even making Lonesome Rhodes look halfway sane.

12. Don't forget John Rocker

I'm sure he'd be down with the AIDS conspiracy.

I just remembered there was a Giants player about 10 years ago who refused to wear the AIDS ribbon during the "Until there's a cure" game they do every year. I can't remember his name but I'm pretty sure he was a pitcher, also. Maybe Upton remembers him?

13. We were talking about Phillie Phreepers
but other teams have had their share, too. I'll guess the Giant you're thinking of was Dave Dravecky. Sad that he got cancer and all, but he was yet another "righty" pitcher.

8. Methinks Schilling took a hint from Lynn Swann (football)
who got crushed by Ed Rendell when he ran for Governor of PA in 2006.
