Where was God on 9/11?
This is probably pretty old by now, but I just found it. What do you make of it? Personally, I thought it was inspiring, with the exception of the "giving our leaders the strength to do God's will" part at the end.

"Have you ever thought, "Where was God on 9/11 when the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were attacked?" Well, I know where my God was on the morning of September 11, 2001, and He was very busy!

He was discouraging people from taking those four flights. Together they could accommodate more than 1,000 passengers, yet there were only 266 aboard. He was on those four flights giving the terrified passengers the ability to stay calm. Not one of the people who was called by a loved one on one of the hijacked planes mentioned that passengers were panicked, nor was there any screaming in the background. And on one of the flights, God gave strength to the passengers to overcome the hijackers.

God was also busy creating obstacles to prevent people who worked in the WTC from getting to work on time. The work day had begun, more than 50,000 people worked in the two towers, yet only 20,000 were at their desks. On that beautiful morning, God created scores of unexpected traffic delays, subway delays, and commuter train delays. A PATH train packed with commuters was stopped at a signal just short of the WTC and was able to return to Jersey City. And far more meetings were scheduled elsewhere than was usual.

God held up each of the two mighty towers for a half hour so that the people on the lower floors could get out. And when He finally let go, He caused the towers to fall inward rather than to topple over, which would have killed so many more people. The foundations of six surrounding buildings were demolished by the fall of the towers, but God held them up for many hours until all the occupants were safely evacuated.

And when the WTC and Pentagon buildings went down, my God picked up almost 3,500 of His children and carried them to their home for all eternity. He also sat down and cried that 19 of His children could have so much hate in their hearts, that they did not choose him, but another god that doesn't exist, and now they are lost forever.

He sent people trained in dealing with earthly disasters to save those that were injured. And he sent in thousands of others to help in any way they were needed. And He brought people together across the world in a way that moved thousands to tears and hundreds of thousands to prayer—and caused millions to turn to the one true living God.

He still isn't finished. Every day He comforts those who lost loved ones. He is encouraging others to reach out to those who don't know Him or believe in Him. He is giving the leaders of our great nation the strength and conviction to do the right thing, to follow His will, not a popular poll.

So if anyone ever asks, "Where was your God on 9/11?" you can say, "He was everywhere! And, in fact, he is everywhere today and every day." Without a doubt, this was the worst catastrophe most of us have ever seen. I can't imagine getting through such a difficult time without God at my side. Without God, life would be hopeless."

as far as i'm concerned god did fuck-all

you know what, i'm tired of feeling sorry for god for getting in over his head, supposedly he is omnipotent, if he is overwhelmed by the hijacking of four airplanes then no wonder he turned out to be so effing useless during katrina

don't bother to try to inspire me w. good happy horsepucky from the sidelines

i really just don't want to hear it any more

god has turned his back on us a long time ago

.....decisions based on??::shrug: Couldn't have been much love involved because ALL planes weren't ALLOWED to land safely. God either has to be blamed for those planes that DID NOT land safely or he doesn't get credit for the ones that did land safely. Personally, I don't want to live my life at the mercy of some being that may or may not ALLOW me to succeed based on who knows what criteria.:wtf:

31. Why is it people insist on picking and choosing what to............
.....give god credit for?? Supposedly god is Omnipotent meaning he can do anything and everything at any time. If indeed that is a fact then god is as much to blame for everything bad as he is to be given credit for everything good. So the question is NOT how many god saved on 9/11 but why he wasn't capable/willing to save all. What, god picks and chooses who and what he does/saves? Aren't we here at DU railing on Bush for picking and choosing what laws to follow and what one to throw out the window at will?? In FAIRNESS what is different about god picking and choosing who to send to their deaths and who to save? Who to subject to torture and who to save?? I thought god was supposed to love mankind??

19. Uh, god had nothing to do with that
Early flights are generally empty flights. I know because I try to choose them whenever I can so I can fold that armrest up and sit cockeyed and stretch my legs from time to time. People weren't at work yet for the same reason. Many didn't start their days until 8:30 or 9:00 and some didn't come in to restaurant or maintenance jobs until after noon. Excellent engineering held the towers up after the impacts so some people could escape, those who weren't trapped on upper floors or killed by the flash fire. The people who went in to deal with earthly disasters generally died there, on their way to rescue people as the towers fell.

Sorry, but it's a real stretch to see some benevolent god in all of this horror. Believers may feel some comfort in platitudes after the fact, but that's an individual thing.

If there was a benevolent god of the type to watch out for believers, this would never have been allowed to happen. A god who is impersonal enough to allow this to happen is not a benevolent one.

20. Gack.
You know, it's not Christians, or religious people in general, or even religion itself that I find objectionable.

It is the idea of a personal god that is busy interfering in the lives of its creations that I find so very, very offensive.

It is a busybody, soap-opera god. A weak, fallible god. A pickin' and choosin' kind of god that lets some live and lets some die as carelessly as I choose a head of lettuce at the store.

I find no inspiration in this model of an omnipotent being. Its power is capricious and its mercy is strained through an imperfect human mesh. Doesn't it have something better to do?

33. Yep, god doesn't pay attention to the minutia of our lives
If there is a creator (I like to believe in this, then again, I also like to believe in faeries or earth spirits or similar) said creator is busy doing it's own thing, maybe creating more stuff. God is not at all concerned with what happens in our lives. God already knows the outcome and is relatively pleased with it or god would change it, IMO of course. This is after all the god who created both good and evil, perhaps with equal amounts of loving attention. Fend for yourselves children.

30. I wouldn't really say
he was stopping people from getting on the plane or holding buildings up so people could get out, not if that implies that those who did die were not paying enough attention.
God could have smited the hijacker pilots so they could not get on the planes. He could have given Hitler a heart attack.

We don't need a big tragedy to ask that. Where is God when a child gets a disease that brings pain and eventually death? Where is God when someone is attacked? Hit by a car that jumps the curb? It might not be a 9/11 or Holocaust but it is to the people involved.

God doesn't look so good for am omnipotent, omnipresent being who loves us. It looks like he really falls short.
And I believe in God, though I'm not to happy about it. Life made more sense as an agnostic. I say to God, "God you got some 'splainin' to do". God isn't impressed.

I'd guess we come here knowing the bigger things we'll come to face, I just don't know why. I don't have a God's eye view.

God is everywhere and that makes it all the more puzzling.

42. What Kind Of Deity Allows Children To Be Molested Raped And Murdered?
Or if such a deity did exist, then it doesn't care about hungry, starving, sick, abused, beaten, molested, raped, tortured, beheaded, drowned, crushed, burned, and diseased children. Hardly a deity worth worshiping, eh?

One need only look as far as the photographs of the children from "Shock and Awe" to realize the truth about "deities" and their love for humanity. Why are the deities forsaking the innocents of Sudan?

How could such a deity allow a little girl to be held captive and be repeatedly raped? What kind of deity would forsake an innocent child like that?

You'd think that deities could put an end to such things.

(Can you think of any more examples of things that deities could have stopped but didn't?)

45. I'll give you the answer I arrived at years ago.
It is a deity that is nourished by pain, suffering, grief and death.

If people gonna believe in a god, don't they deserve better than a god that gets away with murder by invoking "god's will"?

Me, I believe there are creative and destructive energies that bear absolutely no resemblance to humans and carry none of our sentimental baggage. How they work, I have no idea. Not my problem, nor am I theirs.

In certain moods I will announce a belief in 10,000 gods and goddesses, all of them named Dave and Tina. But I don't drink much anymore.

57. I think this is a classic illustration of free will
God didn't stop the hijackers because then they wouldn't have free will. As I view it, God rarely inteferes with us or with natural law. (inteferences with natural law would be classed as miracles) That doesn't mean that God doesn't care. The proof that he cares is that he walked among us as the Christ.

I don’t have anything else I can say other than I really cant believe anyone would actually offer this fairytale version of 9.11 with a straight face..It’s so completely absurd. It’s also a little insulting to the people who acted heroically (without invisible creatures helping) in saving countless people, and in the process many lost their own lives.
