"The Last Temptation of Christ " VS "The Da Vinci Code" : 'splain sumthing
The Last Temptation of Christ:

At his execution, Jesus is tempted by an alluring image of a peaceful and pleasant life with Mary Magdelene to try to get him to refuse the sacrifice he must make.

Christian rightwing hated it and boycotted it.

The Da Vinci Code:

People find historical evidence that the Bible didn’t come straight from God but was compiled by Emperor Constantine and that Jesus’ divinity was decided by a vote at Nicaea, and that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene, who was of royal blood, and had children by her.

Christian rightwing seems quite anamoured with it.

Both have to do with Jesus refusing/avoiding/nullifying the "sacrifice." But the one the right despised had Jesus finally giving in to his "destiny."

The one the right loves has Jesus never having died.

Whazzup with that???

1. Why do you say that they are enamoured w/ Da Vinci Code?
I thought they were up in arms about it.

4. Every rightwing christian I know read the book and is looking ...
...forward to the movie.

Of course, that is just my personal experience.

However, there was the story a few years back of multiple people in the Bush administration reading it.

On the other hand, I just had an article forwarded to me about how some Christian group plan to refute the movie.

5. Interesting.
Maybe the RWers you know haven't yet gotten the message that they are supposed to be outraged by the book. Boy, will they be embarrassed!

7. I guess we'll see how well the movies does. Correct me if I'm wrong..
...the Authors aren't claiming the story is true, are they? I just read that some Christian groups are gearing up to refute the movie.

13. Tell them to look at a copy of the book
Flip it over and look at the top right corner of the back side of the book. Somewhere there should be the word "fiction." For further proof, go to Waldenbooks (or your own preference). Ask for the fiction section. It will contain The Da Vinci Code.

It never ceases to amaze me that people take this shit so seriously.

17. I agree (although I would substitute bunk for the s-word*)--
and the Left Behind Series is pure fiction, yet many people treat those books as the truth. Much of the end time "teachings" do nothing more than pit Christians against those who don't share their faith and make those Christians want to force their beliefs to come to pass. If we are facing the end of the reign of evil (for that is what Revelation is all about), then there will be a great awakening in the hearts of human beings to the love, mercy, grace, and compassion that God has for the human race. (I love the sound of those words--love, mercy, grace, and compassion are what we all need within the depths of our beings.)

*My attempt at a joke--sort of poking fun at myself. Oh well, I tried!

15. The book is fiction, I don't know why many
Edited on Sat Apr-01-06 10:23 AM by augie38
don't beleive that. I read the book about a year ago and I could not understand all the fuss about it. Dan Brown has written much better books. The Code leaves me scratching my head. The book is controversial, I agree. Maybe its because it leaves an opening to those who have an ax to grind with Christianity.

18. The conservative Christians I know are busy "debunking" this
piece of popular fiction. Most of them haven't read it, however.

20. Reminds me of a line from "A Fish Called Wanda..."
Otto: "Apes don't read philosophy!"

Wanda: "Yes, they do, Otto. They just don't understand it!"

2. Does the right wing love the Da Vinci code?
I think you're right that some christians had a problem with the temptation to christ as depicted in the first, but I'm not sure about the second. I couldn't get past the first five pages.

3. The right loves the da Vinci Code?
I was unaware of that. I thought most hated it. If any do like it, maybe it's because the Catholic Church comes off looking secretive and dishonest.

6. Is your second assertion an obscure "April Fool's" effort?
The right hates DVC. At every opportunity, that fat putz from the Catholic League is spitting all over the camera on the talking head segments. And the fundies do not like the idea of Jeeeeeeeeeesus being a regular guy with a normal sex drive and family life. They much prefer the fairskinned, blue eyed guy with the long, soft, straight hair and the sandals, who glowed in the dark.

I guess my assumption on the second point was based on rightwinger I know personally and Bush and crew having read the book.

14. I, too, was amazed
at the outrage of Last Temptation. Scorsese is a huge Catholic and, I think, did a wonderful job with that movie. The book is pretty damn good, too.

19. It infuriates them to think of Jesus as, ya know, sec-tual.
You know perfectly well Jesus was concerned only with Mary M's eternal welfare. He barely noticed she was a female. :eyes:
