Women Falling Away From Religion, Report Finds
It’s hardly news that men and women act differently. But a new poll indicates that gone are the days when women were traditionally the spiritual leader of the family home.

Pollster and researcher George Barna released a report on religious changes in America this week revealing some surprising results. Barna concludes that women have experienced a significant spiritual change in the past two decades.

Women today are attending church and Sunday school less, reading the Bible less, and consider their faith less important in their lives, according to the new survey.

2. Not surprising.
Since the Church was a construct of men for the sole purpose of subjugating others.

4. Not all religions are patriarchal
but I do agree with you that (Christian) churches are male dominated for the most part in the United States, and women feel that their freedom in terms of education, lifestyle choices, etc are limited by low self esteem men.

5. Fair enough.
Can we agree that it's a societal control mechanism either way?

15. most of the women I know including myself are becoming spiritual
rather than dogmatically religious. I wonder if they asked that question? I think the majority would probably state that spirituality is the path they are on, not organized religion.

3. I always found that "falling away" phrase insulting
Most women I know didn't simply drift away, they stomped off in sheer disgust at the institutionalized misogyny of a system with male gods, male officials, and hundreds of inconvenient rules all aimed at controlling women.

"Falling away" makes it sound like it conflicted with a manicure appointment.

6. I agree.
Falling away makes it sound like the poor women were just too weak to keep up with religion.

7. The article is amazing for what it posits as sequelae of the trend.
First, it offers no hint of speculation about WHY the participation of women in traditional churches/religious roles is decreasing. Not a sniff, not a hypothesis, not a shadow of a phantom of an idea. None, nil, zip, nit.

Second, it posits that churches will respond to the trend by becoming (essentially) MORE male-dominated:

>>If women become less of a mainstay in what occurs within churches, will ministries respond by increasing the male-friendliness of the proceedings? And, as women become less front-and-center, will men be pressured to upgrade their church involvement?<<

In other words, if the ladies stop bringing casseroles for the after-funeral beanfeast, will we have to ask the guys to stop at KFC and pick up a bucket?

The cluelessness... it burns...

flabbergastedly,
Bright

10. Fallen women!
Oh no! :-)

More power to them. Us, that is. Women. Women who have awakened and smelled the coffee.

12. I grew up Catholic
haven't been to church in well over 40 years. Have absolutely no respect for religion what so ever. I try to live a good life, probably better than a lot that profess to be christians.

So women have made HUGE gains in terms of education - particularly in math and science - and the workplace and are now questioning organized religion?

That explains why the far right is trying to make them into glorified baby factories...
