Church launches government attack(Scotland)
Source: BBC

The Roman Catholic Church in Scotland has accused the Labour government of conducting a "systematic and unrelenting attack on family values".

The attack came as Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy, a practising Catholic, claimed religious faith has a role in British politics.

Mr Murphy said in a lecture that Labour best represents people of faith.

But Scotland's most senior Roman Catholic accused the government of "undermining religious freedom".

And a spokesman for the Scottish National Party said Mr Murphy was guilty of "crude electioneering" by trying to "corner the market regarding people's faith".

He also told the audience that like faith, the family was "another force for good" and "the most important thing in our country".

The minister added: "As well as providing a supportive intellectual environment, it's a potential source of financial support in difficult days."

His comments were in contrast to the stated attitude of former Labour communications chief Alastair Campbell.

I know several British people who say that people of faith are in the minority in England as atheists are here.

3. Ungrateful Cardinal - Labour cowered before the churches, backed down, and still he whines
Victory for religious groups as Labour gives up on Equality Bill clause condemned by Pope

The Government has backed down over a clause in the Equality Bill that was described as an “unjust” restriction on religious freedom by Pope Benedict XVI.

But the nasty, bigoted cardinal isn't satisfied that he gets to keep discriminating against homosexuals in employment. Instead, the ingrate tries to smear the party that cravenly gave in to his demands for homophobia. Give bastards like the cardinal an inch, and he takes a mile.

10. What do you mean by "oppression."
Edited on Tue Feb-23-10 04:15 PM by Deep13
What specifically are Protestant loyalists doing to Catholics?

Anyway, this is another example of why the churches should stay the fuck out of public policy.

Even if you are right, it does not change the fact that the RC church has been working to undermine democracy for centuries.

14. Vatican has committed genocide, soaked the soil of Europe with blood
in the Crusades/Inquistions -- burned women/Hammer of Witches --

and continues its war on women -- has spread hatred and intolerance for Jews all

over Europe -- and hatred and intolerance for homosexuals all over the world --

and you want to say they were "oppressed" in Ireland!!???

It wasn't a religious war, for one --

but, agree it was posed that way.

Both CHURCH elements were seeking power over government -

Religion is a handy landmine which often takes care of other problems for the elites --

See India -- divided into Pakistan and India allegedly by religious need -- after British

lost India as their colony.

16. you're right...
But all this is mainly an issue of power corrupting. Any philosophy, political movement or religion will become authoritarian when it is the dominant religion or philosophy. It's not isolated to Christianity.

7. Family values like fucking children? As far as I'm concerned, the Catholic Church has
forfeited any right to ever, ever be offended, outraged or indignant about anything, ever, ever again, for eternity.
