A Pagan Christmas to All
Among the mouth-breathingest of mouth-breathing Republicans, it's a well-known fact that every November or so, we libruls gather in our covens and plot the paganization of Christmas. In their Left Behind-style fantasies, we are the legions of Satan, come upon the Earth to foist secular ideas and Godless traditions upon the flock of the Lamb. Only the Bible stands in defense of the faithful against the pernicious attacks of the heathen First Amendment, as we the befouled seek to eradicate every trace of monotheism from our once-God-fearing civilization. Each year, the scarred veterans of the (self-)Right(eous) stir their zealots to action, and in public squares and mangers throughout the land, battles over the soul of American culture are waged.

As in all wars, sometimes an enemy's gallantry on the field of battle impresses even a bitter foe - Napoleon, remarking on the Russian cavalry then crashing into his lines, said "Now these are Kossacks!". Rather like the Confederates at Pickett's Charge, they may be trying to storm a solid position in the name of a dubious set of causes, but we have to respect the temerity it takes to throw oneself into the breach for an issue one really doesn't understand.

4. I really hate it when someone uses oral aspirating as a derogatory remark,
I'm a mouth breather as you put it because my father beat me so hard and so often in my face that my sinus passages are collapsed and I've essentially never been able to breathe through my nose.

I can't imagine anyone willingly being an oral aspirator, nor can I for the life of me figure out how that's become a derogatory comment. Is there some evidence that pre-modern man didn't use his nose?

5. That's the state of DU these days...take a look around..
And count how many posts talk about "Teabaggers," "Repukes," "Shrub," etc. I'd swear 3/4 of DU'ers are under the age of 5.

6. As a fellow "oral aspirator"
I know exactly what you mean, and I think I can help you understand the source of the derogatory nature of the remark "mouth-breather."

Just like you, my problem comes from a broken nose in childhood and a severely deviated septum. The most common source of injuries such as this is frequent fighting. The term itself is a derogatory name for someone so unsophisticated that they have to fight to solve their problems.

It comes from the more "genteel" times of the US, when among the upper-crusty-types fighting was considered passe, taboo, or even forbidden. They loved to look down their noses at the unsophisticated types, and since they considered fighting to be a sure sign of lack of sophistication, "mouth-breather" became an insult.

It's sad, but if you dig deep enough, just about every insult you can find comes from some sort of stereotype or another. That's why I like to use the term "cock-bite" as an insult. It seems a nicely vulgar and very universal term for an unpleasant person you'd rather not have around.

8. Oh, great, so because my father had the "right" to beat the crap out of me,
I'm going to be deemed a troglodyte? Doesn't it occur to anyone that if someone leaves a fight becoming an oral apirator, it means they didn't fight very well if at all? Meaning we are not the trogs but the victims????!!!!

Thanks for the explanation.
