Vatican criticises Swiss minaret ban
AFP 30 November 2009, 08:03pm IST

VATICAN CITY: The Vatican on Monday endorsed criticism by Swiss bishops that a vote in Switzerland to ban the construction of mosque minarets was a blow to religious freedom.

Antonio Maria Sveglio, president of the pontifical council on migration, told the ANSA news agency that "we are on the same page" as the Conference of Swiss Bishops.

In a statement after Sunday's vote, the conference said it "heightens the problems of cohabitation between religions" while secretary-general Felix Gmur told Vatican Radio it was "heavy blow to religious freedom and integration" ... http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/europe/Vatican-criticises-Swiss-minaret-ban-/articleshow/5285334.cms

3. What did the pope do here?
The swiss voted to ban minarets. The Swiss bishops claimed this was a blow to religious integration, and other called it intolerant. The pope agrees with them and feels the ban was wrong.

13. "a blow to religious freedom"
This, coming from an organization that will deny communion to someone who doesn't follow lockstep with the church dogma.

With all that hypocrisy in Rome, how do they find room for all their gold, jewels, and art?

15. I'm not sure why you post in this mostly intolerant forum in the first place.
While I admire your energy and commitment ... and agree with most of the items that you post ...

The primary audience here are atheists, and some of them are very angry atheists unwilling to hear or even consider the actual point that you are making. It is impossible in the minds of these people that an act of the Catholic church is actually positive.

This is the Atheist vs. Theist forum, in actuality. Posts that deviate from this formula will be ignored or derided.

16. "Nobody likes me,
everybody hates me, guess I'll eat some worms..."

Before you make invitations to your pity party, you might want to read the many posts by atheists in this and another minaret thread joining in the Catholic condemnation of the Swiss.

If you want to whine, there's a journal option for that.

17. you're a newbie around this joint
still wet behind the ears. I've been here for years and seen the same cycle of arguments go around and around and around.

You think you know a great deal more than you do. There is no cure for that.

All I see is a new round of faces saying the same old thing, which others said better first.

19. I agree with the Pope here - but without his hypocrisy.
I'm not the one leading an organization that has delivered its fair share of blows to religious freedom. I've always been consistent and always will be. Believe what you want - just don't force it into secular society. Build and decorate as you will as long as you pay for it and keep it off public property. Preach what you want as long as it is not incitement to violence. Make your own mind up, and let the rest of us do likewise.

I have not the slightest interest in whether your towers are straight or bulbous, or what decoration you put on top. Freedom from religion is in lockstep with freedom OF religion and always must be.

20. Every now and again the Catholic Church does something right
But unfortunately that doesn't make up for all the rest of the intolerant bullshit they push.
