Satan, I mean seriously?
While I am an atheist, I do understand intellectually the people who support the concept of God as an intelligence or unseen force in the Universe. I find no evidence of this, but I get the idea and why others believe.
But Satan? Really, people believing in some evil, demonic bogeyman, causing the world's woe.
This is beyond ignorant and superstitious, it's just plain insanity.

And that this isn't placed in the same category as Faeries, Unicorns and the Loch Ness Monster is baffling.

Here's the only evil one behind the scenes I know of;

1. ah
so you DO believe in Satan! vbg

As an agnostic, I too do find the concept of Satan much sillier than the concept of God.

I can understand a "Prime Mover."

But some force for evil? Evil is such a relative term anyways.

2. You just made the best case for Satan's existence, despite yourself
Someone like Cheney, who is not only an evil, criminal bastard, but who has also survived at least a half a dozen heart attacks, cannot possibly exist without some sort of supernatural "backup"

3. Who else are you going to blame
when you've done something wrong and don't want to take personal responsibility for it? "Satan tricked me into doing that. I'll pray for strength to resist him next time." See how easy it is?

I mean Miroslav Satan who won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins last year. He is a free agent now and I would love to see him signing with the NJ Devils.

7. Girard says "Satan", which in Hebrew means "the adversary", is the community

when it is swept up in its hatred of a common scapegoat. "Satan" is a metaphoric name for all of us as one when we choose a scapegoat to attack and expel or kill. Satan is us, when we act as one. Satan is the violence of all against one.

Noting the ways and places in which "Satan" appears in scripture, this makes sense to me.

But no, I don't think Satan is some kind of evil demi-god who sits on my shoulder and tells me to do bad things.

8. Personally, I think
Satan as a distinct being lets us off the hook. I don't buy it. It allows people to think of evil as something other than themselves, something separate.

I think rather, we all have the capacity for evil, for harming another, for ignoring the world's hurts.
