Poll question: Does the Biblical story of Cain and Abel prove
that God hates vegetarians, and that is why vegetarians are so aggressive?

3. Cain was the hunter-gatherer-herdsman and Abel was the farmer-agriculturalist.
 One interpretation I read (Joseph Campbell??) was that Cain regarded Abel's claim of 'ownership' of God's earth as a sacrilege.

4. Genesis 4:1-5
Edited on Sun Apr-05-09 12:05 AM by Occam Bandage
Adam knew his wife Eve intimately, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. She said, "I have had a male child with the LORD's help." Then she also gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel became a shepherd of a flock, but Cain cultivated the land. In the course of time Cain presented some of the land's produce as an offering to the LORD. And Abel also presented an offering — some of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. The Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but He did not have regard for Cain and his offering. Cain was furious, and he was downcast.

I agree that Cain and Abel likely represent early conflicts in sedentary society, but I believe it is between farmers and herders, and not sedentary societies and hunting-gathering ones. I think Jacob/Esau is a good comparison between hunter-gatherers and sedentary societies, on the other hand.

6. Ah! I had it backwards. Thanks.
I should've remembered the "dissed offering" aspect.

10. Basically it was a range war. Cattleman vs. homesteader.
Cain vs. Abel was the world's first western.
