Church invites gay center to share building

WHITE PLAINS - A United Methodist church in the city that has been at the forefront of calling for the full inclusion of gays and lesbians in Christian and civil life has invited the region's largest gay community center to share its church building.

The Loft, a widely known, 27-year-old community center for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in the Lower Hudson Valley, has moved into vacant office space at Memorial United Methodist Church on Bryant Avenue.

The church plans to hold a worship service welcoming The Loft at 10 a.m. today.

"It's a real exciting moment in the life of our church," said the Rev. Joseph Agne, the church's pastor, who was arrested in 2000 with other demonstrators for protesting United Methodist policies on homosexuality at a national denominational gathering in Cleveland.

1. this is all very well and good but....
unless I missed something, The United Methodist Church's official policy is to not extend equal treatment to gays and lesbians. If I am wrong about this, please enlighten me.

It's nice to see people of faith actually teaching love instead of hate.
