Lovers caught in Malaysia's anti-Valentine drive
Source: WLOS

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Romance has landed some young Muslim couples in legal trouble in Malaysia.

Authorities say they arrested 26 unmarried Muslim couples in hotel rooms during Operation Valentine -- an annual sweep aimed at curbing illegal premarital sex in the conservative country.

Sharia laws make it illegal for unmarried Muslims to meet behind closed doors. The laws don't apply to Christian and Hindu citizens who together make up about 40 percent of the Malaysian population.

The crime called "close proximity" has a maximum fine of about $300 and up to six months in jail.

5. Don't worry, Sue, you're safe, the cops in this country usually only do this to gay couples.
And only recently in Texas.

6. No they do not!
This is just a small conservative segment trying to remind the population they are still around. These "religious patrols" always have police escort cause they have a tendency of being beaten up by pissed of citizens. Without the police they are very quiet, just issuing stupid fatwas and edicts thinking how important they are and people really give the crap about them. Also really depends on which part of the country. Some areas are far more conservative while other less conservative areas have Muslims that like to eat bacon. The government does little cause these nuts do vote as well and the government loves those votes and tries really hards not to loose them to a far more conservative political party.
