Even if Jesus isn't who they have long said he is, He still is what He said and taught. Spong's central thesis is that we can all have that within us, too.

What difference does it make if Jesus was married (as most Jewish men his age would have been)? The words, the ideas, the passion -- they would animate Western Civilization just as well?
