Fawcett omission from Oscar segment no accident

Academy says the actress was not included in the In Memoriam segment because she was a TV star
By SANDY COHEN, Associated Press

The executive director of the film academy says Farrah Fawcett wasn't included in the Academy Awards In Memoriam segment because the actress was better known as a TV star.

Bruce Davis says it was a difficult decision for the committee that assembles the segment to omit Fawcett and that he's not surprised that some fans and family members are upset.

Fawcett and actor Gene Barry were both omitted from the necrology sequence. Davis says he and his colleagues thought the two were best known for their "remarkable television work" and would be more appropriately honored by the television academy at the Emmy Awards.

Davis says "an unusual number of extremely distinguished screenwriters" died this year, and the academy tried to honor many of them in the short memorial.

13. all exceptionally bad films
This is it doesn't count, of course. A documentary about rehearsals for a tour where he plays himself? That's not acting.

5. And what about Bea Arthur?
Wasn't she even a nominee for Mame?

7. No, not a nominee.
She was nominated for a golden globe for Mame but not Oscar.

I see why they left her off, she only did 3 movies and one (history of the world) was a cameo.

I can even agree with leaving Fawcett off the list, she was mainly a TV/poster star.

But including Michael Jackson was bullshit. Pure commercialism bullshit.

9. Michael Jackson starred in a film, wrote songs for several more
Jackson was a vital part of the film biz long before he did the Wiz. His hit song Ben propelled that film's success, same for his giant hit years later done for Free Willy.
This Is It, the documentary film about rehearsals for his last tour, is the top selling doc of all time.
Jackson had been involved in several areas of film work, clearly, to great profit and acclaim. He was also perhaps the world's greatest movie fan, which expressed itself in many ways, an example would be Thriller, all about horror movies, narrated by Vincent Price.
I'd have included Farrah as well. Bea too. But that is beside the point.

6. Who they honor really depends on who and how many died that year. Poor Gregory Peck died
right after Bob Hope and Katharine Hepburn, so his tribute at the Oscars totally sucked.

10. I think Michael Jackson should get the blame
He had a lot to do with Ms. Fawcett being left off. It's all his fault. :sarcasm:

11. The thing is, Farrah Fawcett was an actor.
She was one of theirs and she deserved better.

12. Don Knotts had far more movie roles
And when he died he didn't even get a mention at the Oscars.

What about Harvey Korman?

14. She died the same day as Michael Jackson (or around that time)
and I think she wasn't going to get the same recognition no matter what happened. Still surprising as she was so well known.
