Baz Luhrmann Is Going to Direct "Wicked"
I hope he's going to be more faithful to the book than the musical.

I just came from Australia, btw. It was great.

4. Some Critics Have It In for Him I Think
Reviews are mixed. Either they like it a lot, or think it's schmaltz.

I didn't like Moulin Rouge the first time I watched it. "Geez, where's the plot? This is it? TRITE!" It was only after another viewing I realized just how brilliantly it was done. The plot here is pretty predictable but the ride is a great trip, nonetheless.

6. Moulin Rouge is fantasticly done
and Romeo and Juliet borders on being a masterpiece. Strictly ballroom is decent but not my favorite film. Nicole Kidman did such great work for him in Moulin Rouge that Australia should be great.

13. See, I Loved Strictly Ballroom
The dance behind the curtain is one of the all-time steamiest things I've ever seen in a movie not made for titillatin'. YMMV :)

2. I thoroughly enjoyed "Australia" as well- much better film than we expected

This is definately one to see on the BIG screen, with its outstanding scenery of the Bungle Bungles area- and the bombing of Darwin.

David Gulpilil (of Walkabout fame's) character was exceptional-

And the villians were as evil as they come....

9. Yep- that's him!
His full name is David Gulpilil Ridjimiraril Dalaithngu.

He became well into his culture and has been quite an ambassador for aboriginal peoples over the years:

12. I Saw A Blip On Him
This weekend that said he was shocked to learn, recently, that Jimi Hendrix passed away.

Walkabout was a heartbreaker.

5. One of my all time favorite books!
I didn't see the musical when it was here. I'm not much for musicals. But I'll definitely see the movie (assuming it's not a musical, that is).

10. Australia Premiered when I was in Sydney
And the theater was a few blocks from our hotel. We were going to try to get in to see whole red carpet thing (so I could drool over Hugh Jackman in person). But, a woman came into the hotel lobby just as we were leaving and reported that she'd tried to get in, but the police shooed away anyone who didn't have a ticket. Oh, well. I guess I'll just have to wait to molest Hugh. :D

I thought the book was very good
Edited on Mon Dec-01-08 07:19 AM by dddem
I thought the musical was the best one I've ever seen. I've seen it twice, and hope it comes back to Boston so I can see it again.

sorry, I must have hit this twice.

14. I don't like musicals but
saw it in Chicago because my daughter wanted to and I liked it. Though the departures from the book were odd at best and maddening at worst. Plus I thought the changes to try and incorporate the lion, tinman, and scarecrow as characters from the novel were just really, really lame not to mention that Dorothy and her companions have no role in the novel beyond the basic--which is why I liked the book so much.
