I Have A Lot Of LP's And Cassette's Of Good Music That I Like To Download To My iPod......
how do I do this? I see that their are products on the market that can record your LP's or cassette's to a CD. But could one then download that to iTunes and ultimately have it wind up on an iPod? Or do these products record to the CD in a format that is incompatible with iTunes/iPod? Any help would be appreciated.

4. You're talking about 2 separate steps here..
1)Converting your LP's and Cassettes to the digital format of an mp3 audio file.
2)Transferring those mp3 audio files to an mp3 audio player such as an ipod or burning them onto an audio cd.

The answer to question 1 is that you'd need both the cables to connect a turntable/cassette player to your computer and then also an audio capture program (someone more knowledgable than I should be able to recommend one) which you would then use to play the songs on the original device while recording it to your computer. Each bit of captured audio data will then be an mp3 file.

You can then transfer those mp3 files to an audio application such as itunes or winamp, which can then be used to move them to an ipod.

If you wanted to convert these songs to a cd rather than an ipod you would also load them to a program such as itunes and winamp, only instead of moving them to your ipod or other mp3 player, would burn them to a cd.

6. AUDACITY is a free recording program for LP -> computer -> CD
converting to mp3 would be another step from wav to mp3 using AUDACITY

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

I believe it is for windows

7. As another post said it is a two step process
I use a freebie converter called Audiograbber to take the line in and convert it to mp3 format. You can name the artist, album, and track name so it's available for your Ipod. Then download it to your Ipod. There are probably commercial applications that work better, but on a budget I think it works well.

9. If you have a Mac, which you probably don't.

...since you would've said so, you can use Garage Band. It'll not only convert to MP3, but also MP4 (iPOD's preferred format), but it can add dynamic range to lifeless cassette recordings, reduce tape hiss and cut down the cracks, hums and pops of LPs. They also make USB turntables now for about $120. If you have a serviceable tape deck, just hook up the l/r RCA cables to the audio input on your Mac. PCs may also have inputs.

If you have a Mac, you already have Garage Band. It comes with the Mac for free as part of iLife.:hi:

Be sure to back them up on CDs after your done!
