Is Tarantino Planning To Make A Godzilla Movie?
Is Tarantino Planning To Make A Godzilla Movie?

In an interview this past weekend with the BBC, "Death Proof" director, Quintin Tarantino, was asked what movie franchise he would like to take over and make his own? He answered quite quickly and very matter-of-factly, "Godzilla!". He would go on to explain that not only was he a fan of the long running Japanese monster series, but that he already had an idea for a movie that he wasn't at liberty to discuss in detail.

None of this should come as much of a surprise. Tarantino has used Asian cinema as the inspiration for scenes in several of his films. The director also has a history with the "King of the Monsters", using sets from GMK in his martial arts (Lady Snowblood) homage, "Kill Bill." He was also a celebrity guest at the world premiere of "Godzilla: Final Wars" in Hollywood in 2004.

It has been rumored for some time that Toho has been searching for a director to make another American Godzilla movie after the 1998 Devlin & Emmerich film failed to deliver as promised. This rumor has recently lead to speculation that the J.J. Abrams monster movie, known as Cloverfield(1-18-08), may indeed be a Godzilla movie. Abrams has, of course, denied this to the hilt. Is it possible that Tarantino has used his connections with the Japanese film industry to get permission to make a Godzilla movie? Only time will tell, but the idea doesn't seem too far-fetched.

1. Interesting...
Tarantino does good homage film making, so it should be interesting in the same way as Kankeo's "GMK" was to the 'Zilla series. Cross pollination and the re imagining of classic concepts have been the hallmark of Kaiju cinema since it's inception and Quentin's take on the genre would be fun to watch.

I love how there's a flavor of Godzilla film for everyone, no matter what their preferred type of movie may be.

In would be interesting if the Abrams Cloverfield project, Tarantino's floating of his desire to make a Godzilla film and the rumblings we've been hearing from Toho are interconnected in some way. I do have to say, however, that most of the industry insiders who deal with genre films don't see any connections between these projects and producers as of yet.
