3. "A Stillness At Appomattox." Again. I waited for vacation.
David McCullough (you have heard of him) said it was the book that changed his life.

It changed mine, too. Thank you, Bruce Catton.

6. The Hercules Text by Jack McDevitt.
It's his first novel, and I didn't even know about it until I saw a reference to it here on DU.

I LOVE all of Jack McDevitt's novels, and if you are even remotely into s-f, you should read his stuff.

Oh, and by the way, The Hercules Text is a First Contact novel. I'm only a hundred pages into it, so I have no idea how it will play out, but it's very good so far.

As an aspiring writer, I need to learn not to feel envious of such writers as Jack McDevitt.

10. WHISKEY KILLS by Johnny D. Boggs
It's a sequel to Killstraight which I read last week.

The books are both short, 220 pp. The first is memorable, the Commanche Indian, Daniel Killstraight, is a likable character.

Book 62

R'd, of course...

13. Anthill by E.O Wilson
Fiction, BUT lots of natural history info woven into one boy's journey to become an environmental lawyer in Alabama.

Excellent book for the issues at hand and "clean" enough to give your kids to acquaint them with the interactions between nature and human activity.

Wilson (from Alabama) is now at Harvard and has won numerous prizes (including Pulitzer) for his ecological studies as well as his deep research into ants.

26. Still reading "The Grass Crown" by Colleen McCullough.
I'm put to the start of the War of The Allies, where several Italian states declare independence from Rome after the Roman politician Marcus Livius Drusus, who was trying to give citizenship to all Italians, was assassinated.

Actually, it's my favorite Reacher story yet.

I had to give up on "The Help." Maybe I'll go back to it later.
