Alaskans start $10,000 fund-raising for statewide recount
Alaskans need $10,000 deposit for a statewide recount.
Posted on our message board: Alaska is calling for a recount and needs to raise funds. Help keep the investigation going!
From Alaska Recount 2004:

Voters in Juneau, Fairbanks and elsewhere in the state have linked up to call for a recount of the votes in the Alaska election for U.S. senator. A recount seems justified primarily for two reasons:

Exit polls showed Tony Knowles winning (50 - 47 %) http://www.politicalstrategy.org/archives/000738.php, but in the results he lost by a significant margin.
Alaska has an efficient and up-to-date voting system. Nevertheless, no system is foolproof. Optical scan machines like those used in Alaska have generated anomalous results in Florida and elsewhere and were targeted in the New Hampshire recount (which, by the way, is showing in that case that the machines were reasonably accurate. www.boston.com but that there were some anomalies
In order to request a recount, the candidate or group requesting the recount must pay a deposit of $10,000. This must be done within 5 days of the official announcment of election results by the Division of Elections (expected December 1). http://216.156.183.56/

1. 9200 votes are all that separate us from a monarchy and a
democracy. Did it say where to send it? I will donate.

12. Wonderful to see
It's so frustrating to see that lack of money is holding up so many recounts.

13. To those who are skeptical, we should have done this in 2002
Republican Senator Wayne Allard was running behind in Colorado with the momentum going in the other direction. When the results were revealed he, like Coleman, had won in a final surge that the pollsters failed to detect. The identical phenomenon occurred in New Hampshire, where popular Governor Jean Shaheen, who had been on Al Gore’s short list for the vice presidency in 2000, appeared on her way to the U.S. Senate. The pollsters were once more revealed to be dramatically wrong as John Sununu Jr. pulled through with another one of those 2002 Republican final surges to nip his opponent at the wire.

The most widely observed case of Republicans seemingly clutching victory from the jaws of defeat occurred in Georgia. This is the state where Karl Rove enticed lackluster Congressman Saxby Chambliss to run against Vietnam War hero and incumbent Senator Max Cleland. Despite shameful television ads showing Cleland alongside Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden the incumbent appeared to have weathered the storm and was ahead in the polls, as was Democratic Governor Roy Barnes. On Election Day the Republicans had scored two more of those amazing come from behind victories in the face of negative poll forecasts as Chambliss and Republican gubernatorial candidate Sonny Perdue both won.

A few perceptive analysts observed the strong showings made by Chambliss and Perdue in polling areas when the widely heralded new Diebold voting machines were in use. They dovetailed this information alongside the fact that similar machines were being used in the other races in which Republicans had scored dramatic triumphs.

See the entire commentary here: http://www.politicalstrategy.org/archives/000869.php

Even if you only have five or ten dollars (like me) contribute now. It's really an investment in our future. The Repubs think we're all talk and no action, that we don't put our money where our mouth is. So, let's prove them wrong :)
