Hargett seems to be unaware that HAVA funds can be used not just to buy voting machines but to implement them....

...Sheesh. What next, no elections? Washington County Texas commissioners abolished the Washington County elections administrator job, meanwhile Putnam County Tennessee custs voting places cut from 44 to 25....

NVRA Analysis Flawed
Champaign County Clerk. There is so much swirling in the legislative air regarding election administration reform that its hard to keep up. Im doing my best.
Where the paper goes terribly awry is with its analysis of list maintenance procedures. While purporting to be an analysis of the NVRA 15 years on, the paper basically ignores HAVA and the advances that have been made in the last 5 years on the HAVA requirement for a statewide voter registration database.
As a policy blue print for improving the NVRA, the ACS report is lacking. More disappointing, the actual arguments that it brings to the discussion are sometimes misleading, inaccurate, or incomplete. /

Redistricting Reform #3
So what happens when we allow partisan redistricting? The short answer is bad things. Heres the longer answer: /

ACORN report says group needs reforms
December 8, 2009 (CNN) -- Community organizing group ACORN needs wide-ranging reforms after an embezzlement scandal, but broke no laws when conservative activists posing as a prostitute and a pimp approached members in a videotaped "sting," an attorney's report concludes.
It urged the group, which has branched out into a variety of fields, to return to its "core competency" of community organizing; to replace its affiliate-dominated governing board with one made up mostly of independent members; to beef up its internal controls and accounting staff; and to hire an independent inspector general. /

1. We don't elect our election officials in TN, except indirectly.
Edited on Thu Dec-10-09 12:27 PM by Fly by night
The Secretary of State (and several other constitutional officers) are appointed by our state legislature. The party in power (no matter how illegitimately they obtained that power) gets to appoint who they want. In our case, a state legislature that went Republican for the first time in 140+ years (but only after keeping DREs in place for 2008 AND only after winning every open seat for our legislature) picked the wicked witch from West Tennessee, Tre Hargett, as our Secretary of State and his hillbilly side-kick, Mark Goins (a graduate of Pat Robertson's Regent University Law School (mascot: the Fightin' Election Thieves)), as our State Election Coordinator. Rethugs also got to take control of all 95 county election commissions with their historic, unprecedented and unexpected (except to the DRE programmers) win.

No wonder that Master Tre and Deliverance Mark are fighting tooth-and-nail to keep our elections unsafe. They know which side their bread is buttered (and it ain't the free, fair and verifiable elections side).

I hope people here will visit the posted TN link and comment. I sure have.

3. Campaign finance reports now on Cuyahoga Board of Elections' Web site
By Ellen Kleinerman, The Plain Dealer
December 10, 2009, 9:00AM

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- For the first time, campaign finance reports are available on the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections' Web site.

Posted on Wednesday were reports for municipal and countywide candidates going back to 2003. Reports for council and judicial candidates go up next, followed by reports on tax issues and political action groups.

But don't look for 2009 accountings just yet. Those will be added after the reports are audited, said Jane Platten, the board's director.

A candidate's finance report lists the names of donors and their contributions as well as how a candidate spends the money taken in...
