Debra Bowen of Marina del Rey was leading Deborah Ortiz of Sacramento for secretary of state in early returns, as the two Democratic state senators battled to face incumbent Bruce McPherson in November.

Both women's campaigns have been fairly low-key, neither raising enough money for a high-profile media campaign.
