County elections officials are questioning whether New Mexico can quickly switch to a paper ballot-based system and have it in place by the November general election.
However, Gov. Bill Richardson said Friday that he’s sticking with the proposal despite the concerns.
“I believe there is no need to delay,” Richardson said at a news conference. “With all due respect to the county clerks, we’ve waited long enough to have in New Mexico prompt and efficient and trustworthy elections.
“We can’t wait any longer for a bureaucracy to stand in the way of getting this done.”
Mario Trujillo, the president of a group representing all 33 county clerks, sent a letter to Richardson last week outlining several potential problems that could surface with the change to a paper-ballot system statewide....
