Rush Holt needs your signature and 10 friends. SUPER IMPORTANT!
Here's an email that probably many DU-ers have received. If you haven't received it, read it carefully and please sign tne petition AND GET TEN OR MORE OF YOUR FRIENDS TO DO THE SAME. 3000 signers is a piddling amount for an issue as important as this one. This is in my opinion the most important issue today and maybe the most important in the history of the country. Here's Rush's email:

January 26, 2006

Dear XXXX,

Thank you for signing the petition in support of The Voter Confidence and Increased Accessibility Act (H.R. 550). Since being introduced in February of 2005, H.R. 550 has received an enormous amount of public support and substantial Congressional support. The only way the bill will pass, however, is through continued public pressure on Congressional leaders to bring it up for a vote.

I'm proud to report that the online petition you signed has garnered more than 3,000 signatures from people all over the nation. Talk of the petition reverberated around the blogosphere, and gave people an outlet to do something constructive with their concern over the integrity of our elections. Also, a sister petition posted by the bipartisan group VoteTrustUSA collected an additional 3,500 signatures.

We've made progress. Since H.R. 550 was first introduced, at least 20 states have taken the initiative to pass their own legislation requiring paper records of votes cast, bringing the total to 26 states. Also, a coalition of bipartisan voting rights groups has hosted H.R. 550 lobby days in Washington. They have attracted hundreds of concerned citizens and resulted in more of my colleagues taking up the cause and co-sponsoring H.R. 550. Another lobby day is coming this April, and I hope you will join them in Washington for that.

The start of the 2006 legislative session on January 31st, and the recent resignation of Rep. Bob Ney as Chairman of the House Administration Committee, also present new and unique opportunities to get H.R. 550 to the floor. To read more about Ney's resignation and what it means for H.R. 550 click here. There is no time like the present to strengthen this effort and let the committee know the importance of this bill for our democracy.

You can continue making this effort successful by forwarding this message to 10 friends and ask them to sign the petition by visiting http://www.rushholt.com/. And don't forget to visit me in Washington in April. We cannot allow another election to go by with results clouded by uncertainty, and with the 2006 elections now just months away, we need to make sure that every vote is counted using a voter-verified paper audit trail.

Because of H.R. 550's importance, its realistic goals, and its strong bi-partisan support (it has 159 co-sponsors, Democrats and Republicans), I believe it is our best hope to restore integrity and voter confidence to our electoral process. I thank you for signing my petition, and hope you will forward it to those who share our values.

Sincerely,

RUSH HOLT

Member of Congress

P.S. If you have already done so, thank you for signing up to receive future e-mails on this and other important issues. If you have not opted-in yet, please do so by clicking here. Thank you again, for making your voice heard on this issue.

5. 26 states. That's getting closer to constitutional amendment
numbers. That should be the final goal in the fair elections fight. We need a constitutional amendment that grantees the right to vote, the right to fair and open elections and the right to have ones vote counted.

We need a way to guarantee that elections are controlled by the public for the public. We need a national minimum standerd for voting rights.

7. I keep getting an error: Check your data and try again.
What's up with that? I've tried four times, used different email addresses in case they don't recognize my personal domain name as a legit addy... I'm not sure how I can manage to get my name, email and zip code wrong four times.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe I signed it already in the past?

9. I just got a note from somebody else with the same response.
I tried to type in the person's name and email address myself and got the same response.

Maybe if you try later. If that's true of a lot of others, then somebody needs to tell Rush Holt about it.

ANYBODY ELSE OUT THERE HAVING PROBLEMS ADDING YOUR NAME TO THE PETITION??

10. I just got it to take my friend's email address and name.
I think it might have to do with volume. Maybe so many people (I hope) are clogging the lines that the computer just can't take it and throws up its hands and gives the only response it has learned: "Check your data and try again!"

It's frustrating though. Computers are all just like Hal on Space Odyssey: it's always somebody else's fault, never theirs. Do you think they ever think of checking THEIR OWN data? Nooooooooo!! It's always YOUR fault.
