NYS Rally for Paper Ballots!
Edited on Mon Oct-31-05 10:02 PM by Bill Bored
This Election Day may be the last time that New Yorkers vote on mechanical lever machines. What will we replace them with? New York State citizens, legislators, and technical experts are calling for paper ballots and optical scanners (PBOS) rather than untested, unauditable, problem prone electronic voting machines (DREs).

Join New Yorkers for Verified Voting and the NYS League of Women Voters for a rally in at the State Capitol in Albany on Monday, November 7 at 12 pm. We're rallying to call for adoption of PBOS, and transparency in the voting machine selection process.

Elections belong to the public, not to voting machine vendors looking to maximize profits. Join us to tell state officials that we don't want to vote on unproven, expensive, error prone DREs.

NYS Rally for Paper Ballots
Location: State Capitol Steps, Albany NY
Date: Monday, November 7
Time: 12 Noon

PS -- I know, I know, Optical Scanners are computers too. But it's the BALLOTS stupid! Unlike some other states, we have auditing and recount laws in NY and the easier the BALLOTS are to hand count, the more assurance there will be that the outcome of every election is the correct one.

Thanks for your support!

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

November 3, 2005

ALBANY - The state Board of Elections gave tentative approval yesterday to regulations governing new machines that are supposed to replace that icon of New York voting - the lever-action model.

A critic immediately charged that the board was shutting out the public and that New York could wind up with voting machines that might have security concerns.

The regulations will allow electronic voting machines, including touch-screen models, and optical scan machinery as long as it includes a backup system that would serve disabled voters.

The board action will lead to a 45-day public comment period after which the board can modify the regulations.

3. Please Attend One of These Events!
This week, without any prior notice to the public, the State Board of Elections approved Voting System Standards which define the rules for certification, testing, and use of New York’s new voting systems. But these weak regulations do nothing to address vital issues of voting system security, usability, and accessibility. Adoption of these vague and unspecific rules would be a disaster for New York. We can’t let this happen.

On Monday, November 7, we need you to come out and join New Yorkers for Verified Voting in Albany and NYC to tell the State Board of Elections:

* We demand reliable, secure, accessible and auditable voting in NY.
* We won’t vote on unproven, expensive, error prone DREs.
* We demand voting machine standards that don’t give away the store to vendors seeking huge profits selling NY electronic touchscreen voting machines.

Join New Yorkers for Verified Voting for a rally in at the State Capitol in Albany on Monday, November 7 at 12 Noon (details below).

For those in the New York City area, NYVV is holding a press conference in Manhattan on the same day. The press conference will be held at 11:15AM on the City Hall steps (details below).

Please join us at one our dual events on Monday 11/7 to tell state officials that we don’t want to vote on unproven, expensive, error prone DREs.

And here’s a link where you can let your friends know about the rally:
