has anyone seen Leahy's statement on Gonzalez?
Part of it was read on CNN. Leahy said that the nomination of Gonzalez would give senators a chance to seek accountability on the torture of prisoners, the secrecy of the Bush administration, and some other matters.

It sounded as if Dem senators intend to open a big can of whup-ass.

1. I wouldn't count on it, judging on their past performance of nominating
Ashcroft to Attorney General.

The only Dems that voted for Ashcroft were a few DINOs, Feingold and Chris Dodd (I think).

EDIT: Yes, here it is:

Eight Democrats joined all the Senate's Republicans to confirm Ashcroft. They included: Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, Robert Byrd of West Virginia, John Breaux of Louisiana and Zell Miller of Georgia.

One Democrat stepped forward to express unexpected support for the nomination. Connecticut's Dodd said he thought White and Hormel were treated shamefully, but he was not willing to punish Ashcroft in the same way. Thus, Dodd said, Ashcroft would get a 'yes' vote.

7. Hey, what have they got to lose now?
Is Bush going to give Leahy any pork? This is the guy Cheney told to fuck off...what does he have to lose by asking tough questions? Not getting reelected? So what?

People shouldn't be so damn worried about getting reelected. Maybe then they could do some of the things that need to be done. And then, maybe REGULAR people would respect the politicians....

Or, more likely, a principled stand would be taken, the politician would valiantly champion his cause, and then go humbly (and by a large margin) down to defeat. Still, some good might be done.

15. Senator Leahy
has never bent over for this administration. Read the speech he gave prior to the IWR vote. I'm pretty sure he voted against Ashcroft and he's been great about trying to block right wing judges. Leahy represents Vermonters, and they support what he's doing.

9. We will see.
Personally I expect most of the arguments to not be heard on the news except the news that the Democrats are being obstructionists.

16. They can open up all the cans of whup ass they want
but are any of them going to have the balls to see it through once it's opened? They haven't in the past, so unless some of them got gonads transplanted recently, they'll just bend over and hand the repukes the vaseline.

18. I don't think that all of the Dems
will oppose Gonzalez. They seem to want to save their filibusters for Supreme Court judges.
