The last two weeks have seen an unprecedented series of events and articles regarding election reform, and the investigation of the 2004 election irregularities. As you can see below, many media venues (and highly respected statesmen/politicians) are now investigating and speaking out on these issues. Isn’t it time you do it too?

Please investigate and report on these important stories:

Miami Herald Discusses Clint Curtis, Calls for a Return to Paper Ballots!
Condemns E-Voting, Outlines a Litany of What Went Wrong in 2004 Election Fiasco!

“The drumbeat of the pro-democracy movement in America (who could have ever imagined there'd be a need for one in this country?!) seems to be growing louder as more and more Mainstream Media folks get into the game!

Following on the heels of yesterday's Miami Herald piece about Miami-Dade's possible return to paper ballots, Herald columnist, Robert Steinback jumps in with a damning condemnation of Electronic Voting today pointing out that, "Nothing is more important, for the world's pre-eminent democracy, than assuring the sanctity of each vote."

Summary of the Clint Curtis story:
“In his (Curtis) affidavit and videotaped sworn testimony presented before members of the U.S. House Judiciary committee, Curtis claims to have been asked by U.S. Congressman Tom Feeney (R-FL) to design a "vote-rigging software prototype".

(Chicago) Tribune Media Services syndicate – (Story to be published April 14th) - The
THE SILENT SCREAM OF NUMBERS by Robert C. Koehler - Tribune Media Services

“As they slowly hack democracy to death, we're as alone - we citizens - as we've ever been, protected only by the dust-covered cliches of the nation's founding: "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty."

It's time to blow off the dust and start paying the price.

The media are not on our side. The politicians are not on our side. It's just us, connecting the dots, fitting the fragments together, crunching the numbers, wanting to know why there were so many irregularities in the last election and why these glitches and dirty tricks and wacko numbers had not just an anti-Kerry but a racist tinge. This is not about partisan politics. It's more like: "Oh no, this can't be true."

I just got back from what was officially called the National Election Reform Conference, in Nashville, Tenn., an extraordinary pulling together of disparate voting-rights activists - 30 states were represented, 15 red and 15 blue - sponsored by a Nashville group called Gathering to Save Our Democracy. It had the feel of 1775: citizen patriots taking matters into their own hands to reclaim the republic. This was the level of its urgency.”

April 1st - Analysis of the 2004 Presidential Election Exit Poll Discrepancies

The report concludes: “ We believe that the absence of any statistically-plausible explanation for the discrepancy between Edison/Mitofsky’s exit poll data and the official presidential vote tally is an unanswered question of vital national importance that needs thorough investigation.”

Complete report:
http://electionarchive.org/ucvAnalysis/US/Exit_Polls_2004_Edison-Mitofsky.pdf

An executive summary of the report by is available at:
http://electionarchive.org/ucvAnalysis/US/Exit_Polls_summary.pdf

Press release:
Scientific Analysis Suggests Presidential Vote Counts May Have Been Altered

“Officially, President Bush won November's election by 2.5%, yet exit polls showed Kerry winning by 3% <1>. According to a report to be released today by a group of university statisticians, the odds of a discrepancy this large between the national exit poll and election results happening by accident are close to 1 in a million.

In other words, by random chance alone, it could not have happened. But it did.”

Group says chance of exit polls being so wrong in '04 vote is one-in-959,000
By Stephen Dyer - Beacon Journal staff writer

“There's a one-in-959,000 chance that exit polls could have been so wrong in predicting the outcome of the 2004 presidential election, according to a statistical analysis released Thursday.”

“The explanation for the discrepancy that was offered by the exit polling firm -- that Kerry voters were more likely to participate in the exit polling -- is an ``implausible theory,'' according to the report issued Thursday by US Count Votes, a group that claims it's made up of about two dozen statisticians.”
http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/news/11284237.htm

Analysis - Vote Counts May Have Been Altered

“The consortium that conducted the presidential exit polls, Edison/Mitofsky, issued a report in January suggesting that the discrepancy between election results and exit polls occurred because Bush voters were more reticent than Kerry voters in response to pollsters.

The authors of this newly released scientific study "Analysis of the 2004 Presidential Election Poll Discrepancies" considers this "reluctant Bush responder" hypothesis to be highly implausible, based on extensive analysis of Edison/Mitofsky's exit poll data. They conclude, /“The required pattern of exit poll participation by Kerry and Bush voters to satisfy the exit poll data defies empirical experience and common sense under any assumed scenario.”

A state-by-state analysis of the discrepancy between exit polls and official election results shows highly improbable skewing of the election results, overwhelmingly biased towards the President.”

“Ph.D. statisticians in America who have seen this group's preliminary exit poll study have not refuted it. This new study is a much more comprehensive an analysis of the exit poll discrepancies.”

Of course, this would have an impact only in a democracy, not a regime, but kudos to Conyers for making noise about it.

9. MAXIMIZE the cracks in the Wall of Silence - Kick this and BLAST AWAY!
I have to wait til I get home... But then, watch out! My ISP's email server will be smokin'!

Recommendations for email blasting:

Less than 500 words
Plain text only
Use an original subject line
20% or greater original text
(last two are to prevent being treated like spam)

Also, some ISP's identify you as a spammer if you send out to 50 or more email addresses per message. Do small batches (I recommend 24 per blast to play it safe), otherwise your ISP may shut your email account down for 24 hours or more (its happened to me).

26. Now, over 17,000 individual emails sent so far
FYI - How I know (requested in the GD thread):

I can easily estimate the minimum sent. In each blast, a tracking email is sent back to me (unless someone chooses to optionally remove it). So I just have to count the number of emails that are sent to the tracking alias, times the number of media sent to, and voila! I have a conservative estimate (since I'm sure some do remove the tracking em).

38. ADDED: RAW STORY - Carter Election Reform Commission
Edited on Sat Apr-16-05 05:54 PM by tommcintyre
Questions surface regarding legitimacy of Baker-Carter election reform commission. By Larisa Alexandrovna

"Serious questions of conservative partisanship have surfaced surrounding an electoral reform commission co-chaired by former President Jimmy Carter and erstwhile Secretary of State James Baker, RAW STORY has learned."

“Perhaps most significant, however, is the partisan makeup of those on the Commission's panels. In a situation reminiscent of GOPUSA and Gannongate, a recent election reform group has seemingly sprouted from nowhere and in short order landed a seat at the table."

"After seeing the full map (which will be published this evening), Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), who held Congressional hearings on Ohio’s election irregularities and fueled the effort for the Ohio electoral challenge, issued the following statement Thursday.
“These connections truly are astounding,” Conyers said. “It apparently wasn't enough that Republican officials helped sway the election in favor of Bush—now they've even created a phony voting rights group to combat the real work that progressives are doing to make sure that every vote is counted.”
