and I'll hold that.:) Northampton is right on the Connecticut river, a college town, and college area. It has great bookstores. A very diverse area. Nice place to live.

finally get out there. I can do some sketching and painting and wander around the famous bookstores. There's bound to be a nice place to eat, too. Sounds like a pretty ideal day trip to me! I've been meaning to do this for years but somehow never got around to it.. Since it's on the Connecticut River, it can't be all that far from the dinosaur footprint sites of the Conn. River Valley either - Mass. Is a little state. (I'm from Texas.) Dinosaurs, art, books, beautiful scenery and a a good meal...why did I put if off so long?

Trying to scare up a significant supply energy for it because I want to do a good job that will launch the concept in an exciting way that makes the goals clear and attracts the participation that is essential for success. It's very much in my mind and several additional people have expressed interest. From what Skinner said, it sounds like it will happen at some point and I want to be ready and to be able to jump into the new Forum with some of the organizing and brainstorming already done.

By the way, Skinner told me that the "pinned threads" in a Forum don't have to be locked, they can just keep floating up there. That sounds quite useful for info-gathering or archival threads that we want to stay "alive" and postable. For later, we will probably want to transfer near-complete, usable info collections into the Demopedia -- though I am very concerned about subtle, undetected vandalism by Freepers.

For anyone reading this who wants to know what we are talking about, it's a proposed new Forum named something like
Free Internet/ Free Press/ First Amendment Issues

I have a Mac. I just leave my mouse over the picture with the button down. A window appears with multi-choice menu. Depending on the nature of the source, there will be a variable number of choices. One of them is always "open link in a new window." I choose that and a new window opens with JUST the picture. The new URL ends in the ".jpg" suffix for this picture. I then paste the new picture link URL into my message and that's it. No server involved, as you're not sending the picture from your computer. You just paste the picture link like any other URL and the software at DU pulls in the picture to post. Gratifyingly simple.. Try it, you'll have a feeling of one more accomplishment before you go to bed.

Just to make it easy, here's the picture link from the new APOD pic you heads-upped me about MINUS THE FIRST LETTER OF THE "http" AT THE BEGINNING. (You're right, it's pretty awesome -- thanks, by the way.) Copy it, paste it into a new message, add the starting "h" so the link will work, and see what happens.

Explanation: Don't be fooled by the familiar pattern. The graceful spiral structure seen in this computer visualization does not portray winding spiral arms in a distant galaxy of stars. Instead, the graphic shows spiral shock waves in a three dimensional simulation of an accretion disk -- material swirling onto a compact central object that could represent a white dwarf star, neutron star, or black hole.

Such accretion disks power bright x-ray sources within our own galaxy. They form in binary star systems which consist of a donor star (not shown above), supplying the accreting material, and a compact object whose strong gravity ultimately draws the material towards its surface.

For known x-ray binary systems the size of the accretion disk itself might fall somewhere between the diameter of the Sun (about 1,400,000 kilometers) and the diameter of the Moon's orbit (800,000 kilometers).

One interesting result of the virtual reality astrophysics illustrated here is that the simulated disk develops instabilities which tend to smear out the pronounced spiral shocks.

Sounds rough. I know exactly how you feel.It's my husbands family. He and both his parents are all Democrats and would never vote for the blivet. It's his older and younger sister who voted for * for different reasons. The younger sister lives in NJ and is very well off, she and her husband voted their pocketbooks (which is truly a laugh, because Shrubby is bankrupting the country).

The older sister in Nashville is totally convinced that Saddam Hussein sent his weapons on to Syria before we went into Iraq. She hates the UN, and Colin Powell because he and Kofi Annan are anti-semites (according to her). She lived in Israel as a teenager and did visit there recently. There is absolutely no talking to either she or her husband about this topic, especially since they watch Fox News and listen to Rush Limbaugh. It is very alarming, she and I were once so close. I thought about sending her some information in the form of movies and books like 'Outfoxed', 'Perfectly Legal' (since she thinks the * tax cuts and her $600. tax refund actually benefited her), 'Blinded by the Right', 'The End of Suburbia', 'Control Room', 'The Hunting of the President' (she absolutely hates Clinton, thinks he's a rapist, and will not listen to any facts I refute that opinion with) but I decided it wasn't worth the vitriol and invective she would hurl in my direction. She is totally brainwashed. She even believes the Swift Boat liars for 'truth' smears about Kerry. That's where I totally gave up. It is very sad. And the scariest thing is that they are both highly intelligent people. Propaganda and right wing media have gotten to them too, not just ignorant freepazoids.

I was very proud to have gotten my Republican mom in Fla-la-la to change her vote to Kerry though. I bombarded her with information and appealed to her former New York Democratic roots. It worked so well I tried with my sister-in-law and that was a mistake. She is too far gone. I just hope when she finally realizes what a disaster * really is, and the scales fall from her eyes, that is is not too late by then for the rest of us who have always known the W stands for WRONG.

I know what you're thinking, but no, no mattresses. Better (or worse).

I'm stopped at an intersection, surrounded by cars. All of sudden, a pick-up comes through the green light and stops dead in front of the first car in the next lane, blocking them from moving.

I look up and, suddenly, there are anywhere from 5 to 8 police officers, guns drawn, wearing bulletproof vests surrounding that car. At this point, I look around me and most of the cars had those hidden, blue, undercover cop lights going. So, I ducked.

They open the car's doors and yank the guys out. They threw them on the ground (one directly in front of me) and started going through their pockets.

Luckily, the car behind me had backed up enough for me to pull into the lane to the right, and the driver was nice enough to let me in...

So, there you go. Bienvenido a Miami.

I certainly didn't object when Jesse said "Keep Hope Alive!" After all, I'd like to keep on living.

I am indeed "Hope of the World," after all, I'm not from Mars or Cygnus X-1.

Sometimes it is true that "Hope is on the way," though I sometimes arrive late.

As to my greatness, I am glad to report that my weight has been dropping ever since I moved to a mostly (but not strictly) vegetarian/whole grain diet.

I had a slight pang of concern that the churches associated with those signs might object to this use of them, and I would never put obscenity or true profanity on them. But I concluded that no one would be harmed by these jokes, and there was some fun in seeing something that looked at first glance to be grassroots recognition of the KOEB. The signs are made at an online site, www.churchsigngenerator.com, so I can't claim the original idea.

Most community churches have a limited budget for announcements, and marquee signs have long made sense as they are relatively inexpensive and get the message out. They are so commonly seen that they have become part of the normal background we pass by every day. I think that's why these reworded signs strike me funny. It's a hey...WHAT?? moment.

I look forward to seeing your church's web site when your life settles to the pont that you have time to fix it up.

Maybe I should take up swimming again -- after all, there was that big movie, "Hope Floats."

My web browser has been set to "Astronomy Picture a Day" as its home page for years. Each day there's a wonderful new discovery to make, with a photo and a link-stuffed explanatory paragraph. It's been a great comfort and reminder of all the beauty surrounding us all in a huge universe. When ugly things are happening on Planet Earth, I like to step back a bit. The APOD site is here:

Today's photo is especailly stunning. If you click on the photo at the APOD site, you'll get a much larger version that you can download for a high-quality print or screen saver. To me this image looks like a gigantic glowing version of the old "mystic rose" symbols.


The other day they had a 360 degree vista photo from the top of Mount Everest, and the paragraph explained that the name of the mountain in the local language of Nepal is "Sagarmatha," which means "Forehead of the Sky." The photo is amazing - you can pan to the right and go right around the 360 degree view like you're there with the photographer. to read in your post that he seems in better spirits, health, or whatever the magical something that put the twinkle back is. He's under so much pressure, some of it internal because he cares about what he is doing, and he's all we've got to tell us the truth on TV. The snark and the hotness are nice extras, but they're not the important thing.

I was up very late last night writing a columnist in Wisconsin who obviously hadn't watched the show much, and seemed to think Keith's approach to all the news was funny.
I set him straight -- then sent a copy of the letter to KO. Don't usually do that, but this time I wanted him to see it.

One of the things we can do in our Group is to alert one another when we need to contact some media jerk and set them straight about Keith or something else especially important to us. Your blockhead columnist might do more than that misspelled meaningless boilerplate reply if he got TEN letters or more. They notice numbers.

It's very good you wrote him. Maybe he won't be quite so blind next time he see's KO's journalism. After all, how often has he been able watch a journalist on TV these last years?

This obsession by the Administration and its cronies on French things, as opposed to Romanian or Chinese or Argentinian or Swedish as being somehow suspect is one of the great bad jokes we are living in.

They are such blind fools. Keith's ancestry is important of course because whatever it was, it produced him, but it is his own business. His keen mind and ready wit are very much his own, wherever he came from.

I don't know how he deals with all this everyday and has managed to create a space where he can give something different than the absolute lowest common denominator of pseudonews pap. But I'm very, very glad that he has and hope he can continue.
