Don't 501(c)(3)'s have to file financials on January 31st? How would one obtain a copy of a favorite 501(c)(3)'s financials files with the IRS?

1. not sure if you can see those....
while you probably could file a FOIA request, I think the Internal Revenue Code has a provision that prohibits others from seeing tax returns that aren't their own (thanks Mr. Nixon)

Not sure, and too many beers now to consult the code; I got an A in Federal Tax Practice and Procedure though....

We'll talk later, after I can straighten out my eyes and look at teh code....

2. Its not set in stone
501(c)3 have to file an information return 5 months after the end of their fiscal year -- and there is provision for a 3 month extension.

The non-profit must provide a copy of their latest file return on request of the public (in writing), during normal business hours, or by mail. Also, you can go to www.guidester.org and lookup most non-profit information/returns for free if you know their business name or location.

5. GuideStar?
I think the poster might have meant www.guidestar.org. It is a national database of nonprofit organizations. I think you might have to be a subscriber to see an org's 990 through this site: that is a tax return that every nonprofit is required to file and becomes a matter of public record.

6. www.guidestar.org
Sorry, I meant http://www.guidestar.org/

Registration is required, but viewing 990's is free -- its the more complicated stuff that requires payment.
