one of the more moderate members (hell, he's one of those who criticized Bush judicial nominee Priscilla Owen as a right wing activist). This, of course, does not excuse his god-awful torture memo, but he's certainly among the least right-wing of Bush's nominees and a damn sight better than Ashole.

He seems to be more moderate than expected. I assume Bush learned his
lesson about blatantly religious extremists from John Ashcroft. But that's not as good as it seems. Now Bush can make his attempts to unify church and state more covert than ever.

Some are suggesting that the Democrats block the Gonzales confirmation, but what's the point? Even if the they had the power to
do so, Bush chooses the attorney general nominees. He can keep someone as bad or worse than Gonzales in the position until someone gets appointed. So the country gains nothing from keeping Gonzales out of the Bush Administration.
