Australian plea for 'ugly' women
Source: BBC NEWS

The mayor of a remote Australian mining town has come under fire after saying that female "ugly ducklings" might benefit from its shortage of women. John Molony told a newspaper last week that "with five blokes to every girl, may I suggest that beauty-disadvantaged women should proceed to Mount Isa"...

Located 1,829km (1,136 miles) from Brisbane, Mount Isa is home to one of the world's biggest underground mines. In 2006, there were just 819 women aged 20-24 living there out of a total population of 21,421, according to the most recent census.

Get out of BushWorld and the coming Greater Depression, meet a bunch of employed men who might conceivably not be gay or psychopathic, and live under the only English-speaking government that isn't going fascist....very tempting!

1. There's another side effect to the shortage of women
The high rates of pay for even menial kitchen/canteen work. Something upwards of AU$50,000 pa and still they can't get staff.

7. I'm only aware of that
because my younger sister who lives in Perth was over here for a month in the UK recently. In Western Australia in particular, because of their huge rate of growth, which is related to their mineral resources, there is a major overall shortage in all forms of employment for women. An odd bi-product is that apparently most shops are seriously understaffed causing, for example, extensive check out queues at Woolworths or its equivalent.

Don't sell the children - yet ! :)

3. I'm maybe not the best judge (my wife doesn't approve of me dating) . . .
But my female friends point out that Australian men are maybe a bit retrograde when it comes to male-female equity issues and an American woman might have a bit of adaptation to make before finding happiness. And Mt. Isa is, like, not a very pretty place. Hence their lack of shyness when it comes to concepts of "pretty."

However, your comment about the Aussie government is well taken. Politicians here don't get much chance to be high and mighty, because the regular folks, as a general rule, don't take no shit from nobody. And (despite the painfully long reign of Bush-bud John Howard) rather enjoy tossing the current rascals out on a regular basis.

However, to get back to the mining thing -- the rich in Australia fill the same role they do in the States: they own things and often call the tune. Mining companies are incredibly wealthy right now and happy to throw their weight around (property developers were riding high a few years ago), and the banks are phenomenally powerful.

Nevertheless, Australia is, in many ways, as advertised: The Lucky Country. And I'm glad to be here and not in the States. I don't think I could watch the current campaign without popping a cerebral vessel, and if (fates forfend) McCain operatives manage to steal the election, I'm sure I'd spontaneously combust. Being here I may be able to maintain an even strain even if the worst happens.

11. Well, yes, there's no shortage of snake venom in the country . . .
But mixed with a beer chaser, it's really not that bad.

12. % of husbands help with the housework, I heard in a lecture in 1968, among a list
of national percentages of "new" husbands! But as an Aussie clergyman once opined out there, Australia is the only country in the world where a beer-gut is regarded as a status symbol.
