Former minister Timms is stabbed
Former Labour minister Stephen Timms is in hospital after being stabbed.

Police said Mr Timms was stabbed in the stomach at a constituency event in east London but stressed his injuries were not life-threatening.

They said a woman has been arrested after the incident but gave no further details about the circumstances behind the incident.

Mr Timms served at the Treasury under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown and was recently re-elected as MP for East Ham.

1. Wishing him a speedy recovery
Timms was one of the more well-regarded Labour ministers.

A guy I know who has been PA to two local MPs has some pretty scary stories about "near miss" encounters with sick and angry constituents.

I hate when this happens at the surgeries of elected officials. I think that it is a great tradition that our MP's, no matter whether they are some back bench MP or even the PM hold regular advice surgeries. I helps to keep all politics local. Attacks lie these therefore really do strike at the heart of democracy because it provides reason for those advice surgeries to end.

MP's constituency offices are not by nature super secure buildings, in part because they are paid for out of local party funds. Nor should they need to be.
