Metal plates covered doors and windows at the empty home of Shannon Matthews’s mother last night amid fears of attacks by vigilantes.

Police ordered the building to be sealed within hours of Karen Matthews, 32, appearing in court on charges relating to her daughter’s disappearance.

A source said: “There is a lot of anger from some local people against her.” …

Matthews, wearing cut-price clothes specially bought for her from a branch of Matalan, was also charged with “wilfully neglecting or abandoning” the child in a manner likely to cause “unnecessary suffering or injury to her health”.

Matthews wept as district judge Jonathan Bennett agreed and remanded her in custody to appear before Leeds Crown Court next Wednesday.
But the ruling sparked cheers of, “Yes, yes, yes,” from people who live near her and were crammed into the packed courtroom.

Matthews, who was held on Sunday, was driven away with the angry shouts of a baying 60-strong mob ringing in her ears. Some in the crowd booed and yelled: “Bitch.”

Karen’s own sister, Julie Poskitt, 37, said: “I’m disgusted by this and it makes me feel sick. If this all turns out to be true, I think she deserves to be locked up for good, so she can rot in hell”

5. The News of the World got away with it in the paedophile naming scandal

which ended up with people attacking the house of a paediatrician, because they were too dumb to know the difference. I can remember video of mobs in Portsmouth, laughing their heads off in the street as they phoned up someone who was on their list (whether rightly or wrongly - some addresses they published were wrong) to shout abuse down the phone at them. It was a night's entertainment for them.

Cases cited include a man who committed a sex offence at the age of 19 - 33 years ago - and is considered unlikely to reoffend. He is said to be suicidal over fears of being identified in the paper.

Meanwhile, some prisoners on the south coast have said they are reluctant to participate in treatment programmes, saying they cannot see the point if they are going to be "outed" on their release.

The newspaper publicity has been blamed for a series of vigilante attacks on innocent people. On Friday night a group of around 60 people waving banners and shouting abuse threw paint at a house in Plymouth which they had wrongly identified as home to a paedophile.

In the Midlands, vigilante groups have told police that they intend to use violence to drive out sex offenders.

THE shameless mum of Shannon Matthews has been raking in nearly £400 a week by cheating on benefits, The Sun can reveal.

Karen Matthews, 32 – accused over the abduction of her nine-year-old daughter – told officials she was looking after four of her seven children on her own.

But at the time that Shannon vanished for 24 days in February, she had been living for four years with her supermarket fishmonger boyfriend Craig Meehan, 22. He has been earning around £16,000 a year.

Meehan had bragged at the time of Shannon’s disappearance: “I earn the money. I put the food on the table.” He was dumped by Karen following his arrest on child porn charges.

Government officials were last night trying to work out exactly how much Matthews had claimed in the scam.

The family own a widescreen television and had bought two computers. Social workers had given them a third for Matthews’ eleven-year-old son.

Matthews is facing trial accused of perverting the course of justice and child neglect.

She had claimed to officials last January that she was looking after Shannon and three other children – the eleven-year-old and two others aged five and two – on her own in her council semi in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorks.

Staff believed that no money was going into the household other than her benefits.

Matthews claimed to have had no child support from the fathers of her children.

She also said she had NO partner and was UNABLE to work as she alone was looking after the children.

A source on the Dewsbury Moor estate said yesterday: “It is absolutely appalling. She was claiming and claiming yet Craig has been working for the past four years since he moved in with her. It’s an absolutely shocking state of affairs. It was not a recent scam.

“Goodness knows what the money went on. They had computers and a television but the house was hardly luxurious.”

Officials of the Department of Work and Pensions and HM Revenue & Customs were checking their files on benefit claims last night

Spokesmen for the two bodies said: “We do not comment on individual cases.” But one fuming neighbour yesterday revealed she KNEW Matthews was cheating.

She said: “I reported her three times but nothing was done. She was putting in claims that she was living on her own but in fact Craig was there all the time. It’s been going on a long time.”

Karen Matthews is a bad mother who does not care for her children - only about blokes, claimed three men yesterday who have been closely connected with her.

Her ex-partners, William Marshall, 36, and Paul Hooker, 31, and older brother Martin Matthews, 42, painted a picture of a woman keener on men than her family.

William told how Karen even threatened to throw their daughter Kelly out on the street, if he didn't take her in.

William, who dated Karen after she had split from Shannon's father Leon Rose is father to Karen's fifth child, Kelly Lee Marshall, five.

He now lives with his partner Becky Friar, their two young children and Kelly. He said: "When Kelly was born, I went to see her in the hospital and then would visit her every day.

"I don't think Karen is a good mum. She never looked after Kelly. Before I took her in, the neighbours used to look after her. I was forced to go round there every day to change her nappy and give her her bottle."

He added: "Karen knew I was only visiting to see my daughter and she wanted more. She turned round to me one day and said, 'If you don't want to make a go of it, you'd better take your daughter with you when you leave - or I'll throw her out on the doorstep'.

"I took Kelly with me that day and Karen has only seen her once since. I fought for custody after that and won. After that, Karen made my life hell.

"She once came round to my old flat and poured brake fluid over my old car. It was ruined. Lots of the neighbours saw her.

"We moved soon after and Karen doesn't know where I live now. If I see her in the street, she completely ignores Kelly."

William also revealed he was so ashamed of Karen that he only informed Kelly she was her biological mum this week. The child had previously thought that Becky was her real mother.

Unemployed William said: "Kelly only found out Karen was her mum on Thursday. She has always believed Becky is her mum.

"I am so fed up of it all. When Karen came on television yesterday, I pointed to the screen and said to Kelly, 'See that woman? That's your mum'.

"She pointed at Becky and said, 'No, she's not, she's a scruff. That's my mum'." She's too young to understand."

Another of Karen's ex-partner's Paul Hooker - father to Karen's six-year-old son Daniel - said: "The day I left Karen, she screamed at me to take my son with me.

"She doesn't care about her kids - she's more interested in men."

And Karen's older brother Martin said she could never cope with her kids.

The next-door neighbours of Shannon Matthews have today been arrested on suspicion of benefit fraud.

Amanda and Neil Hyett, of Moorside Road, Dewsbury Moor, are the sister and brother-in-law of Craig Meehan, the ex-partner of Shannon's mother, Karen Matthews, and live in the adjoining semi-detached house.

They were arrested this morning by West Yorkshire Police officers, working with the Department of Work and Pensions, on suspicion of committing fraud offences.

The investigation into the alleged fraud began before the nine-year-old disappeared on February 19.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "West Yorkshire Police officers, assisting the Department of Work and Pensions, have this morning arrested two people from the Dewsbury Moor area on suspicion of committing fraud offences.

"The arrests are not related to an alleged abduction of a nine-year-old girl in February.

"We regularly work with the Department of Work and Pensions to investigate allegations of benefit fraud."
