doesn't fall far from the shit tree? I mean, they're both Canadian, eh ...? ;)
The only USAmerican show I've liked as much as TPB was Larry Sanders. Larry just reminded me so much of Mike Cassidy. I got to play Artie to Mike's Larry one afternoon late in his career in politics, and so my heart was definitely with Rip Torn, who I wished had been available to tend Cassidy full-time ...
Anyhow, truthfully, I watched Corner Gas once and wasn't taken with it, much as I love Leon, or whatever his real name is that I can never remember. (I was peeved when they killed him off in that first 3-parter on DaVinci, since it meant he wouldn't be back. In Street Legal, he and C. David Whatsit's characters were modeled on the guys I articled for, so I had a special fondness for him.) Buddy Peterson. Damn. I just can't ever remember his first name. Not "David" ... googling ... Eric!
Anyhow, if somebody's vouching for it as being on a par with TPB, we'll have to give it another try.
I should mention that I turned Bob Boudelang on to TPB this spring when BBC America showed it, and he digs it mightily. His favourite line seems to be
"The only person I ever knew who got shot twice in one day was a real dick."..."Is he calling me a dick, eh?"
from one of my own favourite episodes. Although I still go with "If I can't smoke and swear I'm fucked", from my other favourite episode. I mean, The People's Choices and Voices Act is fundamental to Canadian democracy, eh?
Edit -- I just remembered -- the funniest TPB episode was the one in the last season where Ricky had the rag superglued to his nose and the truck superglued to his hand. I can't remember a word of dialogue because I spent the whole half hour braying and snorting.
Does anybody else know any other yanks who've watched it? I'd think the Boys would be sorta iconically universal, rather than "Canadian", but I'm not sure how well they do travel.
Maybe BBC America will treat them to Corner Gas sometime in future too.
