Canada to take lead building 'New Haiti'
Canada to take lead building 'New Haiti'

By KATHLEEN HARRIS, Parliamentary Bureau, QMI Agency

OTTAWA — Canada will host politicians from key countries playing a lead role in building a “New Haiti” later this month.

Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon announced this afternoon that representatives from Haiti, the U.S., Brazil, Mexico and Uruguay will gather in Montreal Jan. 25 to reassess pressing needs and to develop a long-term plan for rebuilding Haiti.

Harper is going to milk this for all it's worth politically.

He certainly wasn't concerned when Haitians were reduced to eating mud:

1. Uh huh, sure.....
Haiti is a mere 'convenience' to the Harper cabal at the moment, there will be NO lead role played by the Harper government, hosting doesn't mean squat other than geography, imo.

"Cannon said Harper will play a leading diplomatic role in the long-term reconstruction plans and wants to continue robust rebuilding efforts after the spotlight leaves the crisis."

I have to laugh as Harper was supposed to play a leading role at the Conference on Climate Change and was either ignored or outright snubbed and for good reason.

Now, getting together to develop a long-term "Marshall Plan" scenario for the rebuilding of Haiti is a good thing and much needed but to pretend Harper had anything to do with this is laughable, imo.

2. Harp's hoping everyone will forget the proroguing of parliament,
over tortured Afghans, and be in awe of the wonderful humanitarianness of himself.

Betcha he's very grateful for our GG...does what he wants, and is Haitian to boot. What timing eh?

3. Without Further
Research I can see where this is going.

Naomi Klein Issues Haiti Disaster Capitalism Alert: Stop Them Before They Shock Again

NAOMI KLEIN: But as I write about in The Shock Doctrine, crises are often used now as the pretext for pushing through policies that you cannot push through under times of stability. Countries in periods of extreme crisis are desperate for any kind of aid, any kind of money, and are not in a position to negotiate fairly the terms of that exchange.

And I just want to pause for a second and read you something, which is pretty extraordinary. I just put this up on my website. The headline is “Haiti: Stop Them Before They Shock Again.” This went up a few hours ago, three hours ago, I believe, on the Heritage Foundation website.

“Amidst the Suffering, Crisis in Haiti Offers Opportunities to the U.S. In addition to providing immediate humanitarian assistance, the U.S. response to the tragic earthquake in Haiti earthquake offers opportunities to re-shape Haiti’s long-dysfunctional government and economy as well as to improve the image of the United States in the region.” And then goes on.

Now, I don’t know whether things are improving or not, because it took the Heritage Foundation thirteen days before they issued thirty-two free market solutions for Hurricane Katrina. We put that document up on our website, as well. It was close down the housing projects, turn the Gulf Coast into a tax-free free enterprise zone, get rid of the labor laws that forces contractors to pay a living wage. Yeah, so it took them thirteen days before they did that in the case of Katrina. In the case of Haiti, they didn’t even wait twenty-four hours.

4. I agree with her that this requires very close scrutiny...
as to any long-term plan given the past despicable behavior of the U.S., Canada and France as it relates to Haiti.

5. Haiti doesn't have much choice at the moment,
but it might be nice if for a change THEY got to decide on what the 'New Haiti' would look like.

7. No, should be the choice of Haitians,
but I won't hold my breath.

Aristide isn't even an option.

Exiled in South Africa, Arisitide Says He Wants to Return to Haiti to “Help Rebuild the Country, Moving from Misery to Poverty with Dignity”

JEAN-BERTRAND ARISTIDE: As we all know, many people remain buried under tons of rubble and debris, waiting to be rescued. When we think of their suffering, we feel deeply and profoundly that we should be there, in Haiti, with them, trying our best to prevent death. As far as we are concerned, we are ready to leave today, tomorrow, at any time, to join the people of Haiti, to share in their suffering, help rebuild the country, moving from misery to poverty with dignity.

The spirit of Ubuntu, that once led Haiti to emerge as the first independent black nation in 1804, helped Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador attain liberty, and inspired our forefathers to shed their blood for the United States’ independence, cannot die. Today, this spirit of solidarity must and will empower all of us to rebuild Haiti.

9. Just a political line of hooey for Harper,
because Aristide isn't ever going to be allowed to return.
