People don't care about Afghan detainee issue: Harper
OTTAWA–Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Canadians aren't really concerned about allegations that the government engaged in a cover-up over the abuse of Afghan detainees.

2. Since when does Canadians' level of concern dictate government responsibility?
He just gets increasingly arrogant with time.

3. Agreed, wouldn't matter if it made us fall asleep.
Harper is still responsible for what happened, and since the ICC is watching this, it matters a great deal.

4. He's missing the point
Someone needs to point out to Mr. Harper that whether or not Canadians are interested is not the point. His government, or members of it, have been accused of human rights violations and violations of the Geneva Convention. These are war crimes under international law. The allegations and available evidence are enough that the International Criminal Court has launched a preliminary investigation (something they would not have done had there been a legitimate investiation in Canada - such as a public inquiry.)

If you have been accused of a crime "the public is not really interested" is not a defense against that crime. "Your honor I don't think that's very high on the public radar, let's talk about the economy" isn't going to wash. One of these days the International Criminal Court may decide to indict prominent members of the Canadian government - at which point it will show up large on the radar. Mr. Harper, Mr. McKay and the current government need to start answering some questions.

5. And that is exactly why
He felt it necessary to prorogue AGAIN - to eliminate the ongoing investigation.

7. But...
by eliminating the Canadian investigation he caused the International Criminal Court investigation. The ICC only investigates if there is no credible investigation in the country in question and there is nothing Harper can do about the ICC, he has no power there.

8. Yes, and that will do wonders for Canada,
not to mention Harper.

How far we've fallen in just a short time.

6. I think it's time I wrote him a letter telling him what I care about.
I know it doesn't do any good, especially with an arrogant ass like Harper, but composing a really good letter and writing it by hand and sending it still makes me feel better somehow.

Among the points I'll be addressing:
-Many Canadians do care about the detainee issues, and I am one of them
-As justinb said so well upthread, when you're charged with a crime, "nobody cares" isn't a valid defence, anyway.
-Mr. Harper, you're an arrogant prick and a raging asshole. (I'm going to need to polish the language on this one, I think.)
