Ex-MP Rahim Jaffer facing drunk driving, cocaine charges
Edited on Wed Sep-16-09 06:29 PM by Clintonista2
EDMONTON — Rahim Jaffer, the former Conservative MP for Edmonton-Strathcona, has been charged with drunk driving and possession of cocaine.

Jaffer, who is married to Simcoe-Grey Tory MP Helena Guergis, was stopped by police shortly before 1 a.m. on Sept. 11 in Palgrave, a suburban community in the town of Caledon northeast of Toronto.

The former MP was allegedly speeding through the village when he was stopped by the Ontario Provincial Police, who smelled alcohol on his breath and conducted an investigation, Const. Jonathan Beckett said in a news release.

Jaffer is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 19. His driver's licence was suspended for 90 days.

In the run-up to the election, Jaffer's campaign took out an advertisement on and Edmonton's 630 CHED radio that made reference to remarks NDP leader Jack Layton made in 2003 about his appreciation of marijuana.

"Edmontonians understand how difficult it is to make sure our children make the right choices, especially on serious issues like drug use," the advertisement said.

"The Conservative party supports drug-free schools and getting tough on drug dealers who sell illegal drugs to children. Don't let our schools go up in smoke."

1. Hypocrisy seems to be a conservative value, be they Canadians or Americans....
I was pleased when Edmontonians tossed his ass out the door.

2. He was my MP, so you can bet I was pleased
Jaffer was always a cipher to me. I think he would have ingratiated himself with whatever party was in power, just to be an MP. Besides his obvious comfort with being a hypocrite, he never struck me as being that good a fit with the Harper-cons.

3. When I saw the header, I was trying to remember the scandal he...
was involved in so I did a search and it was the 'interview' scandal where his assistant stood in for him, pretending to be Jaffer and when Jaffer was called on it, he first lied and said it WAS him and not his assistant. I am not sure he didn't fit quite well with Harper et al. I remembered, as well, he was often the person the media often called on before this and it seemed to me he parroted the right wing talking points quite well.

4. Oh, he fit in as a liar and a hypocrite all right
I am just not sure that he ever cared about the Reform Party's ideology. He was looking out for number 1 (but putting it that way, I guess he does fit in with the Harper crowd).

I guess what I am saying, is that he struck me as the sort who would adapt to whatever the prevailing political elite happened to be. In Edmonton in the 90's that meant Reform. But I think he could have been a party man in the Soviet Union, had he been born in that time and place.

I go to Carleton, the school where one of his former assistants, Bruce Kyreh-Addo, cheated to win a student union election and created a big brouhaha after having been disqualified.

Am I ever glad to have voted for fellow NDPer Erik Halliwell :D
