The Taliban hates roads
""The Taliban don't like roads because roads mean progress," Brig.-Gen. David Fraser, the Canadian and NATO commander in southern Afghanistan, said during a news conference at Kandahar airbase Saturday."

1. Yeah, that made me sit up and say "WTF?" too.
Sounds very bush-like.

2. An interesting juxtaposition, from the Media Monitors article you posted:

"The highway (a U.S. built road) is already crumbling, and has led Ramazan Bashardost, Afghanistan's former planning minister, to complain that when it came to building roads the Taliban did a better job."

3. Roads serve a military purpose...
I presume the reason insurgents block roadbuilding is because these roads are being constructed primarily to provide military access to areas not currently controlled by the central government and the occupying powers.

At present, US planes can bomb and are bommbing these uncontrolled areas, but without better roads, ground troops cannot easily gain access to or permanently occupy these hostile towns and villages.

4. From David Fraser's Big Fascist Blog...
On the details of what the soldiers were doing, he seemed to contradict information from Nato and from the Afghan police. Nato said they were giving gifts to the population, and the police said they were handing out notebooks and pens.

Asked if this was true, he said: "No, the soldiers were actually doing a security patrol. But there is significant humanitarian assistance going on."

__________

"The soldiers were conducting a patrol in the area to provide security in supporting the Afghan security forces, just trying to reassure the people... that there was security out there and to reassure the people that they could come back..."

__________

"They are a bunch of cowards! If they want to fight I’m willing to have a fight anytime they want, but this is not an honourable fight. They have attacked the fabric of society." says Brigadier-General David Fraser. September 18, 2006

__________

It is the Canadian public and not the Taliban that is the greatest threat to peace and prosperity in Afghanistan, Canada's top military man on the ground told the Star..."our country not supporting the needs of the Afghans who are looking for a future. We need to see this through for as long as Afghans want us here." October 1, 2006

__________

"It is the Afghans' choice. If they don't want us here any more, all they have to do is stand up and say, `Please leave. We don't think you can be of assistance.' But that's not the message I'm getting.

"We're getting this right. We just have to persevere and stick it out."
-- Brigadier-General David Fraser

"The Taliban don't like roads because roads mean progress," -- Brigadier-General David Fraser, October 14, 2006

When Fraser steps down in November, his departure will introduce the difficult personal legacy of having led the bloodiest Canadian campaign since the Korean War. He readily acknowledges the fact. TorStar link

In other words, Brigadier-General David Fraser you're a complete failure; you don't understand the mission, you don't understand modern warfare, you don't understand Afghanistan, you don't understand the Taliban and you don't understand Canada...

And because of it, you've killed men serving under you.

Shame on you for not remembering the first rule; If a animal doesn't know his ground, then an animal ends up either being lost or eaten.

Your both.
