4. Just opened his campaign headquarters in Wausau
He will have a fight as the Repukes are funneling a lot of $ to see him get defeated.

Don't you love his shirts! (I don't know how to cut and paste the picture from his site. For those who haven't seen them the link is below. There navy blue with a spine running down the back)

5. Especailly if Darrow gets the nod.
Edited on Tue Apr-20-04 04:21 PM by JonathanChance
Darrow's got a lot of cash of his own to spend, as well.

(One would think it would be an easy choice: The best behaved and honest politicain in all of congress vs. an owner of a chain of Used Car Dealerships)

It's gonna be long and dirty. Feingold will most lilkey get the same treatment that Cleland down in Georgia got in 2002 for his votes on Iraq and the PATRIOT Act.

7. yep.
"I've made a habit out of beating millionaires by significant margins." - Russ Feingold

Russ is precious.

The same guy who came up with a bunch of Chambliss's bullshit in Georgia is working for Welch. Welch is more worrisome than Darrow, imo.

Madison, WI…] U.S. Senate candidate Bob Welch announced today that national polling and survey research company Public Opinion Strategies has joined his campaign.

“I am pleased to announce that Public Opinion Strategies has joined our campaign to unseat Russ Feingold this fall,” Welch said. “Public Opinion Strategies has a proven track record of providing in-depth survey research to candidates in Wisconsin and across the nation. Their input on this race will be extremely helpful to our campaign for the U.S. Senate.”

Public Opinion Strategies has provided political survey research services to candidates throughout the United States, including the Wisconsin Republican Assembly, Congressman Mark Green and Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker. Since its founding in 1991, Public Opinion Strategies has completed more than 5,500 research projects and interviewed more than 2.4 million Americans across the United States. Public Opinion Strategies has roots in political campaign management, and their research is focused on producing information that compels decisions.

Gene Ulm will be the pollster for Bob Welch’s U.S. Senate campaign. Mr.Ulm has extensive experience polling on behalf of successful U.S. Senate, gubernatorial, congressional, and state legislative campaigns. Notably, Ulm was the pollster for Saxby Chambliss’ underdog defeat of Max Cleland in Georgia’s 2002 U.S. Senate race.

8. So far, so good,
though they're having to get the campaign rolling a lot earlier than would normally be expected, of course.

My sister saw a debate among the Repug challengers the other day, and she said that all four of them spent the entire time bashing Russ Feingold. She still doesn't know what any one of them proposes or stands for.

9. Has he opened up an office near Milwaukee?
Howard Dean got me off my ass and working the phone lines. I can do the same for Russ Feingold when the time comes.

10. Feingold's Milwaukee office
Edited on Wed Apr-21-04 08:05 AM by sybylla
you can find them at

316 N. Milwaukee Street #535
Milwaukee, WI 53202
414/727-5682

Glad to hear you're looking to enlist. There seems to be an amazing number of people motivated to help Russ get reelected. With the stash of cash his opponents have (and always have had) he will need it.

But you also have a battle in Milwaukee for Klezca's seat. As an out-state Dem, I hope you can spare a little time to help the best Dem in that race too. They will need all the "Dean energy" they can get.

12. The 4th CD is strong Dem, so this is actually a great opportunity
for the residents to elect the actual person they want, rather than play "who will beat the Republican?"

I don't have a horse in that race (I'm in the 5th CD), but I've liked elements of just about everyone running. I had a great tag-team conversation with Tim Carpenter and Gwen Moore a couple of weeks ago (they seem to be good friends, even though they're running against each other), and I've also talked to Matt Flynn a couple of times (my friend Zak, a fundraising pro, is working for Flynn). The Dean group had a candidate forum earlier in the month. (We missed you, RetroLounge!) A good showing by all.

I met Shirley Krug for five seconds at an even last year (she couldn't make the forum), so I don't know a whole lot about her.

But it seems to be a strong field.

13. Remember, Russ has done it before.
He faced an opponent who outspent him 3-1 in 1998.

Remember, money talks, but it does not vote.

18. Neumann had a following, though...
...because of his heavy presence on repug radio, his sucking up to the christian coalition types, & his one term as a congressperson. Maybe I'm wrong but my vague impression is that Welch may be the biggest thing to hit Redgranite but would be a tough sell in the Milwaukee area except among the hard core.

19. But if Darrow gets the nod..
He's got name recognition on his side. Everyone has seen and heard the ads for his dealerships in Milwaukee, Madison, and the Fox Valley. That's a whole hell of a lot of votes right there. Name recognition is a big key. It's how we got Jay Johnson into the House.

20. Just got this in my inbox as I was reading through this thread:

(it came from a friend, by the way, not from the campaign)

Well, now we know the Republican campaign theme for unseating Russ Feingold:
"Un-American"
"Cowardly"
"Things are going well in Iraq"
"We're on the right track for changing the entire Middle East"

If you, or any of your friends, haven't been interested or couldn't be
bothered about getting involved in helping Sen. Feingold re-elected these four statements ought to get your blood circulating! They are quotes from Russ Darrow, Robert Lorge, Tim Michels and Robert Welch, respectively, the four Republicans who debated last night (05/22) in Madison. Two, Darrow and Michels, are millionaires capable of self-financing their campaigns. Here's more context. You can go here to read the whole article: http://www.jsonline.com/news/state/apr04/224301.asp

" 'I believe that Russ Feingold's vote was just
terrible. It was really un-American is what it was,' said Darrow, who had donated money to Feingold after the 2001 vote." _ Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

"Lorge, meanwhile, said that Feingold 'cast a cowardly vote against the Patriot Act. He was the only one.' _ Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

"...Michels, a retired Army officer, said he had communicated with friends currently serving in Iraq who told him that the recent portrayals of mayhem and bloodshed from that region obscured a rosier picture. 'Things are going well in Iraq,' he said. _ Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

" Welch praised the Bush administration argument that fighting the war in Iraq would bring stability to the Middle East and reduce the threat of terrorism. 'We're on the right track for changing the entire Middle East,' he said. 'Our military has to stay there. They're living their todays for our tomorrows.' " _ Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

end quote

Jeez, so many wonderful things said, where is one to start???

Last night at our Kerry meetup, we were discussing the fact that SIXTY people showed up for the April 17th Feingold lit drop! That is WONDERFUL, and we need to keep it up!

A Republican in the race for nomination called him "un-american" to enrage the loony base.

22. Yes, but Darrow backtracked later on
said he wasn't questioning Russ Feingold's patriotism, just the patriotism of his vote, whatever the fuck that means...
