DPW Chair Candidate
Jeff Rammelt will speak to the Wood County Democrats tonight.

I'm anxious to meet him and hear what he has to say.

Anybody want me to ask him a question?

I'll be leaving for the meeting around 6 so get questions to me b4 that....

1. I have a question
Edited on Thu Apr-21-05 02:36 PM by sybylla
Jeff was at our 3rd cd convention over the weekend but I didn't get a chance to ask him my question. And that is...

In recent years, the extent of the assistance provided by the DPW to county parties and state assembly and senate campaigns has ended at the doors of the coordinated campaign offices. Many party activists, county party chairs as well as candidates across the state would tell you that, in at least in the rural areas, it isn't getting the job done. What would you do differently as chair to provide additional or perhaps better support and assistance to the county parties and state candidates?

My two cents. :hi: Whether or not you get to ask the question, I hope your meeting goes well. Perhaps we can get Jeff to the next Clark County meeting in May.

2. Clarification needed
what do you mean by "...has ended at the doors of the coordinated campaign offices."

I need to get a better handle on that so I can ask the question....

3. Well, I got to ask him
about what KIND of support they are willing to give local candidates (he refers to Local candidates as "courthouse" candidates)....

He said, money, in some cases but also training for candidates themselves. He also mentioned that they have a "campaign in a box" kit for local candidates.

I like what he said about us being competetive in every district and every race. I agree with that 100%.

Jeff is very likeable, but I can see what other DUers mean when they worry that he is too quiet and reserved. This is going to be tough. Our county delegation is going to the convention "uncommitted" (which I have mixed emotions about) and like all Democratic committees, I suspect voting in a block of 27 votes is going to be like trying to herd cats.

Forgive me for this, but as I was watching Jeff speak last night, I thought about the other candidate too and the image that flashed across my mind was that scene from the original Planet of the Apes where the crew of the space ship spots the planets humans for the first time and observes them from bushes. After evaluating their behavior, Charleton Heston tells the crew, "If this is the best they've got, in six weeks we'll be running the place."

In short, I'm not thrilled with our choices. There certainly aren't any Howard Deans competing for this post.

4. Sorry I couldn't get back to you to clarify
Edited on Fri Apr-22-05 09:34 AM by sybylla
Thanks for asking anyway.

I agree with your "if this is the best they've got" analysis. But I have to add that the more I've seen of Joe Wineke, the less I like him.

Joe was at the 3rd CD convention as well as the Chippewa Dems dinner last weekend and in his speech he was rewriting party history in a quite negative light and pissing at least one local VIP off who sat across the table from me at the dinner. She had been part of this history Joe was rewriting and was very upset about it. I have never seen this woman angry, so angry in fact that she wasn't afraid to tell those of us nearby that what he was saying wasn't true.

On the other hand, Jeff was there as well and did a lot to assuage my doubts about him. As it stands now, he's my choice mainly because I don't like shenanigans and I shun manipulators. But he is a horribly boring and very monotone speaker.

It sounds like the Wineke/Honold crew are trying to assemble the endorsements of the county party chairs. If the Wood Co. Dems are as uncommitted as the Clark County Dems, I wonder how many endorsements they'll actually get.

5. I missed seing Joe speak
but I have had impressions about him long before he announced his candidacy....not positive ones either.....

The County Chair seems determined to remain uncommitted until the time to actually vote and I think that's cool...

I found out that some of our County committee members lurk here a lot.... so, for my fellow Wood County Dems :hi: :toast:

7. As a candidate, and a county chair...
I would think it is not the county chair's business nor the county party's business to endorse a candidate.

Just like when 2 Dems run in a primanry, the state party constitution forbids endorsements from the chair or the party as a whole.

I think it is the chair's responsibility to provide the best information possible for the membership to make their individual decisions.

I have also found that Dems in leadership positions at all levels have been very neutral and accomodating to allowing us to speak at events - the their credit.

I do need to correct a perception of Jeff being 'meek' - that is not the impression you get from Repugs in his area. He is, however, polite to a fault.

Anyway, vote Jeff Rammelt and Jef Hall in Oshkosh

8. I agree Jef
Not only do I think it's improper to endorse, but I think any county chair who does is not doing so in the best interest of his or her county party. How on earth do you work with the chair if you endorsed the opposition?

12. I knew that before you said it, jef
I'm not so sure it would be the same the other way around.

Regardless, it's exceedingly bad politics to endorse.

Check your mail. I'm sending you a pm.

10. A clarification...
I am Jef Hall - I am running for 2nd Vice Chair along with Jeff Rammelt.

I know, it gets confusing. I should change my name.

16. Hey fellow camper! I didn't know you were on one of the slates.
Very cool.

There's an article in today's Isthmus about the race for the chair. All I have to say is, your ticket is looking better and better every day...
