WPR pledge drive
I just called and told why I am NOT giving them money. I named some other organizations who WILL be getting my small amount of money this year. I encourage you to do the same.
Sabriel

2. I do monthly auto-pay
So I'm calling to cancel it. Hubby's been pleading with me to do it nearly all year. Can't stand Joy Cardin and her catering to the extremists. After the election, I'm convinced it's a waste of good money. There are better causes for my money.

3. Just make sure they know why
I won't put up with their pandering and "fairness." I'm sorry that the other, worthy, shows have to suffer, but that's the way it is. I also wrote a letter to Garrison Keillor and told him why I'm no longer supporting the venue for his show...but I would contribute to any organization he saw fit.

6. Cardin makes me nuts!!!
While she is actually hosting Greg Palast tomorrow (Monday 11/8) from 8-9 a.m., we know she is only doing it because it's a pledge drive. Otherwise, we would be treated to yet another professor of political science from XYZ College/University.

I have nothing against Poli. Sci. professors! It's just that is the only type of guest she ever has. What's maddening is that she never challenges anyone on anything unless they start to ask an ACTUAL question with a legitimate concern. Then she accuses the caller of getting "off topic".

People "go off" on her guests or her guests "go off" on callers or toss around ad hominems and she NEVER challenges them or interrupts them.

4. I will not contribute either, "balance" does not mean "objective"
WPR has taken to allowing PR hacks for industry funded think-tanks speak without identifying the vested intersts they represent. All too often they set these shills up as "balance" to thoughtful, rational academic analysis of various issues. I hadn't considered contacting WPR to inform them of my unwillingness to support their lack of journalistic integrity, but after reading this thread I probably will.

7. Good for you.
Since I've posted they've had Krugman, Gitlin, and Palast on. Why didn't we here these voices pre-election.

Sabriel, are we neighbors yet. I recall you were looking for houses on the island.

9. I'm giving up on moving
We're going to stay in Oshkosh, for the time being. Too bad, because the Montessori charter school on Doty looks great.

8. Friggin' Joy Cardin screws us again!
Greg Palast was on this morning. She originally thought she would get $5000 for the hour in pledges. In her efforts to silence him from talking about his work, she increased the goal to $10K, forcing him to talk the whole time about pledging to get his book. They had only taken 2 listener calls by 8:40 this morning.

What a crock! You cannot tell me that NPR is nearly owned by the Repugs and is taking our money. Don't pledge to these morons! Tell them why you are not pledging and give your money to someone who deserves it like BBV.org or your local homeless shelter.

10. F***k WPR
They only have on "celebrity liberals" during pledge drives when they only spend time diving for dollars.

The usual lineup included Ralph Nader and Jim Hightower. Now, they've added Goodman, Krugman and Palast.

Tomorrow, Suck Butt Merens is hosting -- once again -- the continually lying Tim Graham, Director of Media Analysis, Media Research Center. This guy, who is often on WHAD has NEVER made a coherent argument. He is just allowed by all the hosts on WHAD airtime to spout extremist propaganda. The last time he was on, his argument boiled down to: we don't like what we think "their target for the day" meant. He had NO argument. He relied on some kind of psychic interpretation on behalf of the "conservative view."

If you have the inclination, blast this guy tomorrow. It's in the 5:00 hour.

11. Why don't you all post on the WPR site?
I started posting there a while back, but there is little traffic.

Most of my posts have "disappeared."

Anyhow, since there has been so little activity, I've not posted there either for a long time.

Here's the address: http://www.portalwisconsin.org/forum

13. Media Talk
I catch Media talk on Friday afternoons every couple of weeks or so.
http://www.wpr.org/mediatalk/

I am always amazed that while Dave Berkman usually has good topics and guests, it seems it is mostly far-right "liberal media" nuts who flood the phone lines to whine and divert the dicussion.

In other times when I compare the Ideas Network to MPR's Midday and Midmorning, the talk shows do not seem to stay on track as much. It often wanders. I guess I am use to Kerri Miller (and before her Katherine Lampher) and Gary Eichten's style.

14. Dave Berkman's show is always great
But you are right, it's the wingnuts that seem to call and he usually holds their feet to the fire pretty well. He's about the only reason I listen to that miserable network anymore.

Have you ever caught his weekly column in Milwaukee's free weekly paper Shepard's Express? His column is usually posted on their website each week.

16. Here is this week's writing from Berkman
http://www.shepherd-express.com/shepherd/25/50/news_and_views/media_musings.html

You can just go to Shepherd-express.com and then the name of his column is Media Musings. This week's cover story is about the 25th anniversary of the Violent Femmes, a nice Milwaukee band I really like :D

17. Joy Cardin
Since I found this thread, I have been following the topics on WPR online with the streaming. Boy, it is a TERRIBLE format. Like others have said, Cardin has many wingnuts on. And unlike MPR local shows, WPR shows on the Ideas Network only have one side for the entire hour and never mention when the other side is presented (if ever).

WPR in the morning seems to be all right wing, all the time.

20. How about
Public Radio stations from Iowa and Illiois? I am not sure how far you are from the borders, but here are a few stations.

http://www.northernpublicradio.org/

http://www.woi.org/

Or if you are in western Wisconsin:

Here is Madison's Progressive station:

Good Luck with your options.
