John Nichols: Why a conservative paper backs Feingold over Johnson
One veteran Milwaukee pol suggested that the editors must have decided that they had to "balance" their endorsement of Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold with a Republican endorsement in the gubernatorial race.


Johnson's hometown paper, the Oshkosh Northwestern, has endorsed Feingold.

And so has the Green Bay Press-Gazette, which is (along with the Wisconsin State Journal and the Beloit Daily News) one of the state's most reliably conservative daily newspapers. The Press-Gazette has never backed Feingold in any of his races. But it endorsed the senator this year. Why? They met Ron Johnson.
