American Association of University Women Hails Feingold for 2007-2008 Voting Record
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Russ Feingold received a perfect score from the American Association of University Women (AAUW) for issues that matter most to women and families. The AAUW, an organization dedicated to advancing equality for women, recently released a report scoring members of Congress for their votes on AAUW priorities. The AAUW hailed Feingold for his votes on issues including education, equal pay, increasing the minimum wage, civil rights and funding for education and other social services.
“I am honored by this recognition from the American Association of University Women, an organization dedicated to advancing equality,” Feingold said. “While Congress has made some important strides for women and families, there is a lot of work left to do. With rising education costs and some women still facing pay discrimination in the workplace, I will continue to work to ensure American women receive equal pay and that American families are receiving the services they need.”
One of AAUW’s education priorities was reauthorization of the Higher Education Act, which was signed into law this summer. The final version of the Higher Education Act included a provision based on legislation Feingold previously introduced to expand access to TRIO programs for colleges with branch campuses, such as the UW System. The TRIO grant program provides outreach and assistance to low-income students and underrepresented minority students to help these students attend and succeed in college. Feingold has also been a strong supporter of other provisions in the HEA including increasing Pell grants, reforming the student loan system, and providing better training for our teachers.
Since 1881, AAUW has promoted education and equity for women and girls. It has a nationwide network of 100,000 members, 1,300 branches, and 500 college/university institutional partners.
